Earlier, on the morning of December 22nd, residents of Van Mieu commune ( Phu Tho province ) discovered a bomb in the area along the He River, in the Trau area, while excavating soil to level the ground. Upon inspection, authorities determined that the bomb was located in an area with complex terrain, posing significant risks to residents and surrounding community activities.
Immediately after receiving the information, the authorities of Phu Tho province quickly arrived at the scene to inspect, verify, and assess the level of danger. The Provincial Military Command coordinated with the People's Committee of Van Mieu commune to cordon off the area, establish a safety zone, and deploy forces to guard the area 24/7; at the same time, they disseminated information and warned people not to approach the bomb area.
The bomb was identified as a GP300 demolition bomb, weighing approximately 300 kg. This type of bomb was commonly used by the French army during the war between 1946 and 1954. The bomb was designed to inflict massive casualties through shrapnel and shock waves from the explosion.
The GP300 bomb is approximately 1.3 meters long and 40 centimeters in diameter. Despite being buried underground for decades, it still poses a potential risk of detonation. This type of bomb is frequently discovered in many northern provinces such as Son La , Phu Tho, and other areas that were key targets of bombing during the war.
