Canceling a show requires a minimum level of "cultural etiquette".

The last-minute cancellation of the "Come Back Here, Four Birds of the Sky" concert is causing a strong reaction among artists and audiences, with many even threatening to sue the organizers.

The main reason lies in the fact that, despite being unable to hold the concert as scheduled, the organizers did not provide clear notification, causing many artists and audience members to still come to the venue to wait, wasting time and money, and not receiving a satisfactory explanation or apology. This is what fueled their anger and frustration...

In reality, in contemporary performing arts, postponements or cancellations of shows are no longer uncommon. Weather, the artists' health, technical problems, and even financial difficulties can all be contributing factors. What makes the difference – and also marks the boundary between professionalism and amateurism, between respect and disrespect for the audience – lies in the culture of conduct.

Not long ago, I experienced a show being canceled, but the audience was still very happy. Due to the weather, the organizers had no way to continue, so they used various channels to inform the audience.

However, some audience members who were unaware of the cancellation still came, and to their surprise, they were warmly welcomed, apologized to, offered drinks, and guided through the refund process. An impromptu mini-show in the rain took place, with artists wearing raincoats and carrying umbrellas to perform a few songs as a memento. The canceled show became a beautiful memory for both the artists and the audience, with a promise to meet again.

A professional event organizer understands that the audience is a partner in trust. They are willing to share difficulties, but they do not accept a lack of transparency. They may sympathize with objective risks, but they cannot accept being put in a fait accompli situation, nor can they tolerate uncivilized behavior. In a rapidly developing performing arts market like Vietnam, proper conduct when canceling a show must be considered a "minimum standard."

Early and transparent notification of reasons, clear commitments and implementation of refunds, and direct acceptance of audience feedback – these are not just necessary courtesys, but a measure of professionalism. Only when these standards are established and respected can the cultural industry develop sustainably and reach its full potential.
