Airlangga Hartarto is currently in Washington as part of a high-level delegation meeting with his American counterparts to negotiate the 32% tariff on Indonesian exports, which has been suspended for 90 days.
All Indonesian goods entering the US market will be subject to a 32% tariff starting July 9th. These tariffs are part of the latest move by US President Donald Trump to improve Washington's trade imbalance.
Indonesia has proposed increasing imports from the US to up to $19 billion, including approximately $10 billion in energy imports, to eliminate its trade surplus and avoid tariffs threatened by the Trump administration.
"Indonesia also plans to purchase agricultural products such as wheat, soybeans, and soybean meal, while increasing its purchases of goods from the United States," Airlangga Hartarto stated at the press conference.
Indonesia will also exploit key mineral resources and simplify procedures related to importing horticultural products from the United States.
Following meetings with the US Trade Representative and the Secretary of Commerce, the two countries agreed to finalize negotiations within the next 60 days.
Official figures show that total trade between Indonesia and the US reached nearly $38.3 billion in 2024. However, Indonesia is earning more from this trade. Its total exports reached $26.3 billion last year, more than double its imports from the US (nearly $12 billion). Indonesia also recorded $3.7 billion in US foreign direct investment in 2024.
