Historically, Inter Milan have won the Champions League (formerly the European Cup) three times. On all three occasions, the Nerazzurri defeated teams that were also hoping to win the treble.
In the 1963/64 season, Inter Milan faced Real Madrid in the European Cup final. Real Madrid, who had won the Copa del Rey and La Liga, boasted a star-studded squad including Alfredo Di Stefano and Ferenc Puskas. A brace from Mazzola and a goal from Milani secured a 3-1 victory for Inter against "Los Blancos," giving them their first ever European club championship title.
Inter Milan could spoil Man City's party.
A year later, Inter also shattered Benfica's treble dreams by beating the Portuguese club 1-0 in the final. Eusebio's team was also very strong at the time and had already won a domestic double. In the 2009/10 season, Inter continued their winning streak by defeating another team with treble hopes in the Champions League final: Bayern Munich.
Under the guidance of coach Louis van Gaal, the Bavarian club won the Bundesliga and the German Cup. However, in the Champions League final, Diego Milito scored a brace to help Inter win 2-0. Coach Jose Mourinho's team also achieved the first historic treble in the club's history.
Only six clubs in the history of European football – Celtic, Ajax Amsterdam, PSV, Manchester United, Barcelona, Inter, and Bayern Munich – have ever won the treble: the Champions League (formerly the European Cup), the national league title, and the national cup in a single season. Since the European Cup was renamed the Champions League and the Premier League was established, only Inter Milan, Manchester United, Barcelona, and Bayern have achieved this feat. Manchester City is on track to become the next club to win this historic treble, but Inter will be a major obstacle for them.
This season, Inter won two titles, the Italian Super Cup and the Coppa Italia. Therefore, Simone Inzaghi's team could also achieve another treble, although it wouldn't be as great as winning the Champions League (formerly the European Cup), the league title, and the Coppa Italia in a single season.
