Messi was rested in MLS Round 4. |
In the 0-0 draw between Inter Miami and Charlotte FC at Bank of America Stadium on March 15th, Messi did not play. Many spectators believe that David Beckham's club "deceived" them by not announcing the Argentine superstar's absence in advance, leading many to buy tickets primarily to see Messi.
According to ESPN , approximately 80% of tickets for the Inter Miami vs. Charlotte FC match were sold due to fans' expectations of seeing Messi play. However, when spectators arrived at Bank of America Stadium, they learned that the Argentine superstar would not be participating in the game.
Inter Miami kept this information secret until just two hours before kick-off. Coach Javier Mascherano decided to rest Messi and Rodrigo De Paul. Neither was included in the squad and did not travel with the team to North Carolina.
This decision was made to conserve Messi's energy after he played the full 90 minutes in the first leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup round of 16 against Nashville SC (which ended in a 0-0 draw).
On social media, many fans expressed disappointment and accused Inter Miami of a lack of transparency, even "fraudulent" ticket sales. Some comments suggested that if they had known Messi was absent, they would not have bought tickets or would have chosen to watch a different match.
Prior to the match, the average ticket price had skyrocketed to $179 (double the usual price for Charlotte FC's home games). The game ended goalless, with Inter Miami playing noticeably uncreatively without Messi, further dampening the audience's negative experience.
