Google is continuing to integrate Gemini into its ecosystem of most-used products. On March 12th, the company announced that Google Maps will be adding a new AI feature called “Ask Maps,” allowing users to ask complex real-world questions and receive detailed, highly personalized answers.

At the same time, the company has integrated AI into a range of other experiences such as Chrome, Workspaces, and even entered the defense sector. This continuous product rollout demonstrates the technological strength and potential of the world's leading search engine.

Maps is undergoing a major upgrade.

Google has integrated Gemini into its maps app, marking the biggest upgrade in a decade. Google Maps has become a smart personal assistant, adding more features and changing the interface.

First, Gemini supports the Ask Maps feature, allowing users to ask practical questions in natural language, such as requesting help finding a suitable location for a date. The system will filter information and provide the most relevant suggestions, and can analyze multiple requests simultaneously.

This feature automatically remembers each user's personal preferences. Ask Maps even supports direct restaurant reservations. Users can save their favorite places to a list, or share this list with friends with just a few taps.

The update also adds Immersive Navigation, a navigation method that visually displays 3D images of buildings and surrounding terrain. “When needed, Maps will highlight important details on the road such as lanes, pedestrian crossings, traffic lights, and stop signs to help you turn or merge confidently,” a company representative said.

To achieve this, AI will analyze Google's aerial imagery database (Street View). From there, the system provides a detailed spatial view of the entire route, helping drivers better observe complex turns.

Google has also added several other compact features, such as more advanced traffic alerts for routes. The voice guidance has been refined to sound more natural and friendly.

The parking suggestion feature is also activated when approaching the destination. Users will receive real-time traffic congestion alerts and suggestions for alternative routes.

Currently, users in the US and India can use these two features. A desktop version will be released later this year.

AI expansion strategy

Beyond just maps, the company is integrating AI into every workspace. The Google Workspace ecosystem, including familiar applications like Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive, has been upgraded and equipped with Gemini.

Starting March 10th, users who subscribe to paid packages can create content automatically through AI assistants. The system will instantly assist in drafting documents or creating spreadsheets, as well as helping to design professional presentations.

Simultaneously, Google has officially integrated Gemini into the main Chrome interface in India, Canada, and New Zealand. This allows all operations, such as summarizing articles, explaining concepts, or even comparing data across tabs, to take place directly on a single screen.

Users can also create images directly in the browser with Nano Banana. Gemini also helps connect Google services, allowing users to interact with Gmail and YouTube directly within Chrome.

Furthermore, AI has the ability to identify malware injection attacks and prevent potential security risks. The system always requires confirmation before sensitive actions.

Gemini's growth isn't limited to the consumer space. According to Bloomberg, Google has reached a significant agreement with the Pentagon. The US Department of Defense will use Google's AI agents to handle large volumes of data.

Initially, AI will handle tasks on non-confidential networks, significantly reducing the workload for military personnel. Access to classified data is also being further developed by both parties, demonstrating the government 's confidence in Google's capabilities.
