Apple began selling the new iPhone 15 on September 22nd . After a week of use, many people have started sharing their experiences. According to some iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max users, even after only a few minutes of use, the devices become too hot to hold. Meanwhile, some say the two high-end iPhones don't pass the "bending test" and easily break even when bent by hand. Others have noticed discoloration if they aren't used with a case.
Content creator Mohit Verma sparked a discussion about the iPhone 15's temperature in a Twitter post on September 25th. He wrote: “The titanium iPhone 15 Pro naturally gets incredibly hot, to the point where it’s uncontrollable. Also, its temperature increases after just 2 minutes of FaceTime calls or scrolling through Reels (an Instagram feature) for 8 to 10 minutes. This is a new issue for me as I’ve never encountered this with any phone before.”
Verma included a video – now with over 1 million views – to verify his claim. In the video, he uses a thermometer to measure the temperature of an iPhone 15 Pro. The device reached 42 degrees Celsius.
Below the post, user X commented that they also experienced the same thing when performing simple tasks like listening to podcasts. Additionally, the battery drained faster than usual. However, some dismissed this. “It’s definitely faulty. Go to an Apple Store and get a new phone,” one person emphasized.
Korean YouTuber BullsLab recorded iPhone temperatures using a thermal imaging camera. When using the iPhone for gaming, performing demanding tasks, and benchmarking, the device's temperature reached 46 degrees Celsius.
In another viral video, the glass back of an iPhone 15 Pro Max cracks after being broken by hand. The video, by Zack Nelson – owner of the JerryRigEverything channel – has garnered over 7.7 million views on YouTube.
"You've been watching me do smartphone durability tests for about 11 years now, and most phones haven't broken," Nelson explains in the clip. "Especially iPhones, they don't break." However, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is a different story, shocking Nelson.
Many people hypothesize that the lighter titanium frame makes the iPhone 15 Pro more "fragile" than previous iPhone models. Additionally, titanium is prone to fingerprints and may temporarily discolor if not protected by a case.
According to TechRadar, Apple acknowledges that " with the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, skin oils may temporarily change the exterior color." However, simply wiping the device with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth will restore its original appearance.
Regarding the issue of the iPhone 15 Pro overheating, analyst Ming Chi Kuo conducted his own investigation and concluded that it is unrelated to the A17 Pro chip manufactured using TSMC's 3nm process. According to Kuo, the main cause is most likely that Apple compromised in the thermal design to achieve a lighter weight, for example by reducing the heat sink area. The use of a titanium frame also negatively impacts heat dissipation efficiency.
Experts predict Apple will address this through a software update, but the effect may be limited unless Apple reduces processor performance. If Apple doesn't address it properly, this will negatively impact sales of the iPhone 15 Pro line.
