Although Apple's supply chain partners are ready for mass production, global users will likely have to wait longer than expected for the foldable iPhone. The latest reports indicate that the project is undergoing adjustments to its launch timeline and significant changes in its hardware design philosophy.
Signals of delays from key suppliers.
According to a report from the Economic Daily News, major component suppliers to Apple have implicitly confirmed the postponement of the foldable iPhone launch. Enping Lin, CEO of Largan Precision—a camera supplier for Apple—said that several major projects originally scheduled for the third quarter of this year have been delayed until early next year.
In a similar vein, Ruan Chaozong, General Manager of Xinrixing, the company responsible for developing the foldable hinge, revealed that the company is still waiting for Apple to finalize the official delivery schedule. The coincidence in the plans of these two strategic partners reinforces the hypothesis that the first foldable iPhone is facing certain obstacles in its commercialization roadmap.

New display size and design philosophy
Based on data from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone Fold is expected to feature a dual-screen system with impressive specifications:
- External secondary screen: 5.3 inches, roughly the size of an iPhone mini, allowing users to easily operate it with one hand when the device is folded.
- The main screen inside is 7.7 inches, offering approximately the same display space as an iPad mini.
Notably, Apple is expected to adopt a 4:3 aspect ratio for the internal display panel. This design transforms the iPhone Fold into a miniature tablet when unfolded, prioritizing a wide width over a longer height like current Android competitors on the market.
The trade-offs to achieve a thickness of 4.5 mm.
One of the most significant technical highlights of the iPhone Fold is its thickness of just 4.5 mm when unfolded. To achieve this record-breaking figure, Apple had to make some trade-offs in terms of functionality:
First, the device will likely not be equipped with a telephoto camera lens (optical zoom) due to the physical space limitations of the ultra-thin body. Second, the signature Face ID facial recognition system may be completely removed. Instead, Apple will integrate the Touch ID fingerprint sensor directly into the power button, similar to how it has implemented it on the current iPad Air line.
Cautious market entry strategy
Experts predict that Apple may introduce the iPhone Fold at the same time as the iPhone 18 Pro series at its September event, but the actual release date may be pushed back to December or early next year.
Internal sources indicate that the device will only be available in extremely limited quantities initially. This is seen as a strategy to gauge market reaction and optimize the production process before scaling up, similar to how Apple successfully implemented the first generation of AirPods.
