On June 8, the Iranian military said it had delivered a “painful retaliation” following Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon and the Dahiyeh area of Beirut, warning that any further “aggression or hostility,” including in southern Lebanon, would face “much harsher and more destructive measures than before.”
The announcement came just hours after US President Donald Trump publicly called on both sides to immediately cease hostilities.
On June 8th, the US leader made a strong statement on the social media platform Truth Social, declaring: "Israel and Iran must immediately stop firing."
In another post on Truth Social, Trump stated: “Both sides, Israel and Iran, are heading toward an immediate ceasefire! Final talks on ‘peace’ are underway, unless hampered by ignorance or stupidity.”
Mr. Trump added: “The lockdown will remain in full effect until a ‘final agreement’ is reached. Things will move forward quickly soon.”
The statement announced a suspension of anti-Israel activities, but with conditions attached.
In a statement published by Iran's semi-official Tasnim and Fars news agencies, the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Command said Iranian armed forces had carried out a "painful retaliation" against Israel to show support for what they called the "oppressed Lebanese people," following Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon and the Dahiyeh area of Beirut.
The statement read: “The armed forces have suspended military operations (against Israel).”
However, the agency did not provide specific details about the timing or scope of the decision.
At the same time, Iran's Khatam al-Anbiya Central Command issued a direct warning: "If acts of aggression and hostility continue, including in southern Lebanon, much stronger and more destructive measures than before will be implemented."
In a social media post, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian affirmed: “Our priority is national security and peace for our people. We will defend our national interests with all our might and will not back down in the face of any threat. Diplomacy and defense are the two wings of national strength; we will not abandon the battlefield or the negotiating table.”
Pezeshkian added: “With the blessing of Allah, with unity and reason, Iran will also overcome this challenge and emerge victorious.”
There has been no official response from Israel yet.

According to Turkish news outlets today, June 8th, Iran's announcement of suspending military operations comes after Tehran launched nearly 30 ballistic missiles at Israel since the evening of June 7th. Prior to this, the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had declared it would conduct "a week of continuous attacks" as part of Operation Nasr.
For its part, Israel retaliated with multiple airstrikes targeting nine Iranian air defense systems and a petrochemical complex in the southwest of the country.
The Middle East has been in a state of tension since the US and Israel launched airstrikes against Iran in late February, triggering retaliation from Tehran against Israel and other countries in the region that have a US military presence or base.
A temporary ceasefire was established on April 8, but subsequent negotiations stalled due to disagreements over the implementation of the agreement and further developments in the region.
