Iranian government spokesman Ali Bahadori-Jahromi announced the decision, and urged the elderly and people with health problems to stay at home. The Iranian Ministry of Health has also issued a warning to hospitals to prepare for the risk of many people being hospitalized due to the heat. The temperature in the capital Tehran on August 2 is forecast to reach 8 degrees Celsius.
The hot weather in Iran is especially severe in the southern regions. For example, the city of Ahvaz, in the past week, has reached 123 degrees Fahrenheit (51 degrees Celsius).
In addition to Iran, in recent weeks, many countries around the world have suffered from severe heat waves that scientists say are the result of man-made climate change.
