The self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization has threatened to carry out terrorist attacks on stadiums hosting the Champions League quarter-finals this week.
Al Azaim, the media arm of IS, posted a photo of a masked gunman along with threats to attack four stadiums: Emirates (England), Parc des Princes (France), Metropolitano and Santiago Bernabeu (Spain), where Champions League quarter-final matches will be held this week.
Following the warning, the British, French, and Spanish governments affirmed that the situation "is under control." Spanish officials are scheduled to meet on April 9th (local time) to discuss the possibility of increasing security after the IS threat. Security forces have also warned the host club, Real Madrid, about this threat.
An estimated 8,000 fans of Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund will travel to Spain to support their respective clubs. Spain has deployed over 3,000 security personnel to ensure order during the Real Madrid - Manchester City and Atletico - Borussia Dortmund matches. This is not the first time ISIS has threatened to attack sporting events in Europe.
On March 22, the Khorasan group (ISIS-K), the Afghan branch of IS, claimed responsibility for the bloody terrorist attack at Crocus City Hall in Russia, which killed 144 people. French officials said the organization had previously planned attacks in France. Experts believe the recent terrorist attack at Crocus City Hall shows that IS affiliates are quietly resurfacing with ambitions to expand their presence worldwide .
