Alvarez shone against Barcelona.

With a spectacular free-kick that gave the goalkeeper no chance to save in the 44th minute, Alvarez has now scored a total of 9 goals for Atletico Madrid in the 2025/26 Champions League. No player in a single season has done better than the striker born in 2000.

Alvarez surpassed Diego Costa with 8 goals in the 2013/14 season, Antoine Griezmann in the 2015/16 season, and himself in the 2024/25 season with 7 goals each. The "Spider-Man's" European form is impressive, having scored 15 goals in his last 18 Champions League appearances.

Alvarez's moment of brilliance helped Atletico conquer Camp Nou for the first time in two decades, giving them a significant advantage going into the second leg of the quarter-finals.

Speaking after the match, captain Antoine Griezmann praised Alvarez: "He's playing very well. Alvarez gives us extra strength and hopefully he can lead us to the final."

"The semi-final is still quite far away, 90 minutes or more. We will remain calm and confident to aim for the best possible result," the French star added.

On the other side of the pitch, Barcelona captain Ronald Araujo asserted: "Playing at Atletico Madrid's home ground is difficult, but if anyone can do it, it's us. We need to have a positive mentality. Barca are going there with the goal of turning the tide."
