A bitter end for Alvarez.

Julian Alvarez finished his professional season without winning any trophies for the first time, following Atletico Madrid's elimination from the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™.

In the early hours of June 24th, Atletico Madrid defeated Botafogo 1-0, but that wasn't enough to help the La Liga representative advance from the group stage. After three matches, Atletico Madrid has 6 points, level with PSG and Botafogo. However, the Spanish capital team is only ranked third, due to having a worse goal difference than PSG and Botafogo.

Atletico became the first European team to be eliminated from the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™ in the group stage. This meant Alvarez could not continue his impressive career run.

Before joining Atletico Madrid at the start of the 2024/25 season, the Argentine striker always finished the season with at least one trophy. Alvarez began his career at River Plate in 2018, where he consistently won at least one trophy each season, from the Copa Argentina, the 2018 Copa Libertadores, to the Argentine national championship (Primera División).

Even in 2020, when many football activities were suspended, Alvarez still won the South American Youth Championship with the Argentina U23 team. After moving to Manchester City in 2022 for €21.5 million, Alvarez has never gone a season without winning a trophy.

In total, Alvarez won 14 major titles, an incredible achievement for a player at the age of 25. In August 2024, Alvarez joined Atletico Madrid in a record-breaking deal worth up to 95 million euros, marking a new chapter in his career.

In the 2024/25 season, Alvarez displayed consistent form in La Liga, scoring 17 goals and providing 4 assists in 37 matches, averaging 0.61 goals per 90 minutes, ranking second in the club's scoring charts. However, in terms of trophies, Alvarez could not be happy as Atletico finished the 2024/25 season without any major titles.
