The outcome of the US election could decide the course of the Russia conflict.

(CLO) The results of the US presidential election not only affect this country, but also have an impact on many issues around the world , especially the war in Ukraine.

The United States has been Ukraine's biggest supporter in its conflict with Russia since 2022. Under President Joe Biden, the U.S. has so far provided nearly $175 billion worth of military intelligence, cash, and weapons to help Ukraine.

It could be argued that whoever is elected president on November 5th holds Ukraine's destiny in their hands. Michaela Mattes, a professor of political science at the University of California, says the U.S. has three options: cut aid to Ukraine, maintain the status quo, or take more decisive action.

With Harris's support, Trump will be finished.

Democratic presidential candidate and U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris has clearly expressed support for Ukraine. "Harris has committed to standing with Ukraine for as long as necessary," Shawn Donahue, a political scientist at the University of Buffalo in New York, told DW. He added that Harris is also "more likely to allow U.S. long-range weapons to be used against targets inside Russia."

Meanwhile, Professor Mattes agrees that, at the very least, Harris will continue to maintain the status quo and support Ukraine and uphold sanctions against Russia. She may even become more assertive in providing aid to Kyiv.

Republican candidate Donald Trump has a different approach to Ukraine. He has stated that a war between Russia and Ukraine would not have happened if he were president. Furthermore, the former US president pledged to end the war "within 24 hours" if he were re-elected.

Trump has repeatedly mentioned cutting aid to Ukraine if he is elected. And if US support ends completely, European countries will have to shoulder the costs of the war in Ukraine, given that these countries already face numerous internal economic and political problems.

Decision on Ukraine's accession to NATO and sources of aid.

Another major issue is Ukraine's desire to join NATO. Expert Donahue, who has spent time in Ukraine twice since the war began, says that at some point, Harris may well support Ukraine joining NATO.

Conversely, Trump has always been a strong critic of NATO, even arguing that the organization shouldn't protect members who spend too little. Therefore, Ukraine's potential accession to NATO is predicted to be very remote if Trump returns to the White House.

According to a Pew Research Center survey conducted in early July, the percentage of Americans who believe the conflict between Russia and Ukraine poses a threat to U.S. interests has decreased significantly since 2022.

Research shows that only 54% want to continue sending military equipment to Ukraine. This means that Americans are completely divided on whether the country should continue providing aid to Ukraine.
