Indonesia lost to Malaysia in the group stage before winning against Timor Leste by a narrow margin. However, Indonesia still advanced as the best-performing second-placed team, ahead of the Philippines and Cambodia.

Thailand and Indonesia meet again, having previously faced each other in the SEA Games 32 final in Cambodia. On that occasion, Indonesia won 5-2 after 120 minutes of play, in a match marred by numerous red cards.
