Thailand was the most successful Southeast Asian representative at the 2023 Asian Cup, remaining undefeated and keeping a clean sheet for the first time after the group stage. They finished second in Group F by defeating Kyrgyzstan 2-0 and drawing 0-0 with Oman and Saudi Arabia. Only Qatar had the same clean sheet record as Thailand.

Uzbekistan also went through the group stage undefeated and finished second. They drew 0-0 with Syria in their opening match, then defeated India 3-0. In their final match, Uzbekistan drew 1-1 with the strongest team in Group B, Australia.
Uzbekistan's football isn't among the top in Asia, but it has consistently been rated higher than Thailand's for many years. Srecko Katanec's players are fast, skillful, and disciplined. Uzbekistan currently boasts a streak of 10 consecutive unbeaten matches over the past four months.
In terms of personnel, Thailand welcomes back captain Theerathon Bunmathan after his suspension. On the other side, Uzbekistan also has its strongest squad available. The Central Asian team rested some key players or gave them limited playing time in their final group stage match against Australia.
Today's Round of 16 match is seen as a clash between two teams with strong defenses and sharp counter-attacks. The difference in skill level between the two teams is not significant at this point. Therefore, both teams are actively practicing penalty shootouts ahead of the match at Al Janoub Stadium.
Thailand is the only team from Southeast Asia remaining in the 2024 Asian Cup. Team manager Madam Pang and head coach Masatada Ishii both believe the Thai team will overcome Uzbekistan to secure a place in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
