Khabib unexpectedly sent positive advice to his former rival McGregor. |
At an event in New York last weekend, Khabib, a Muslim, frankly shared: “This is punishment. But the most beautiful thing is that Allah always gives people a chance to turn back. I think Conor still has a chance. He needs to change his lifestyle.”
He continued: “Why do I say this? Because if Conor changes, he can change many other people as well. If not, then his life will forever be a punishment.”
Khabib, 36, defeated McGregor at UFC 229 in 2018. The brawl after the fight, when Khabib jumped out of the octagon to continue clashing with McGregor's team, went down in history as one of the most chaotic moments in MMA history.
In 2020, Khabib retired with an undefeated record of 29-0. In contrast, McGregor has only won 1 of his 4 UFC fights since losing to Khabib. The Irish fighter has also been involved in a series of legal scandals, most recently a lawsuit related to sexual assault allegations in 2024.
After breaking his leg in a loss to Dustin Poirier in 2021, "the madman" hasn't stepped into the ring again.
Khabib's statement marks a shift in his perspective. In 2019, he shared: "The story between us will never end - if we meet, we will definitely fight, even if it means going to jail."
On August 1st, McGregor, at age 37, returned to the UFC's doping control program, paving the way for a possible comeback in the near future.
