2025 marks a breakthrough for Apple as it has launched not just one, but two completely new mobile modems developed in-house. After years of development, Apple's first 5G modem, the C1, debuted earlier this year on the iPhone 16e.
Most recently, the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air uses the C1X modem, which is twice as fast as the C1 and consumes 30% less power than the modem in the iPhone 16 Pro. It is also the first device to feature Apple's own N1 chip, which handles Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
Allison Johnson, a reporter from The Verge, said her experience with the C1X modem and N1 chip was completely normal. This is Apple's next step in achieving hardware self-sufficiency, no longer relying on partners like Qualcomm.
However, despite the good performance of their own-manufactured modem chips, the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and Pro Max all use third-party Qualcomm modems.
In response to this information, Arun Mathias, Apple's Vice President of Wireless Software Technology, reassured users that they will soon see the company's mobile solutions in more products.
"We're really focused on what's needed for the iPhone Air. In addition, we also have great products with the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro. Over time, we'll see Apple's mobile solutions in more products," Mathias said.
9to5Mac suggests that this statement implies Apple's rollout of its in-house modem is proceeding cautiously and selectively. This likely stems from challenges in large-scale production capabilities for key flagship models, despite positive performance feedback.
