Hong Linh Mountain, meaning "large mountain," covers an area of approximately 30 square kilometers and spans three districts: Nghi Xuan, Can Loc, and Loc Ha, as well as Hong Linh town. Legend says Hong Linh Mountain has 99 peaks, the highest reaching 678 meters. Depending on their shape, the peaks are named as follows: Thien Tuong, Ngu Ma, Su Tu, Ham Rong, Lap Phong. Many peaks are also named after legends and folk tales, such as Ru Com, Ru Ca, Thap Son, Huong Tich, Lao Quan, Tran Soa, Liet Son…
Hong Linh Mountain has many streams and ravines that, although not deep, never dry up. The water here is crystal clear and flows year-round. Many famous names of streams and mountains have been passed down through folklore and recorded in history, such as: Ha Vang Stream, Hoa Stream, Tuong Stream, Hoang Ngu Stream, and Tien Stream. On the mountain, there are also underground water sources that accumulate into many natural lakes, such as Bau Kim Cuong, located halfway up the mountain and covering 30 acres, with the Thuong Luong Gorge so deep that folklore says it's bottomless; Thien Tuong Lake and Bau Tien, at the foot of the mountain, covering hundreds of acres and with crystal-clear water year-round. Within the mountain are eight long and short mountain passes, connecting from west to east and north to south. The Cong Khanh pass, from Ke Lach to Ke Treo, was formerly the Elephant Road (a road used by war elephants to avoid bridges). This is the same Truong Hong – Do Cai road that the great poet Nguyen Du used to travel from Tien Dien to Truong Luu to meet friends, socialize, and listen to folk songs.
Hong Linh is not only beautiful because of its majestic mountains, but also famous for its ancient legends, such as the story of Ong Dung or the Giant who gathered scattered mountains in the delta of the Lam and La rivers and arranged them into the Hong Linh mountain range. Ong Dung also mined iron ore in Hong Linh and taught the people of Minh Chang and Minh Luong villages the craft of blacksmithing, a trade passed down to this day.
According to legend, Hong Linh was also the capital of the ancient Vietnamese kingdom – Viet Thuong Thi. Legend also says that King Kinh Duong Vuong, before establishing his kingdom, admired the majestic scenery of Hong Linh and chose it as his capital. Here, Kinh Duong Vuong married Than Long, and later fathered Long Vuong (Lac Long Quan). Although it is a legend, it has left a deep historical mark on this mountain. Furthermore, archaeologists have recently discovered many artifacts from the Neolithic, Bronze, and Iron Ages in the surrounding area, indicating that ancient Vietnamese people have lived here since very early times. Throughout thousands of years of national history, Hong Linh has witnessed countless heroic and tragic events, accumulating the spirit of the people of Nghe An province to become a cultural region – the Hong Lam culture.
Hong Linh Mountain today still stands majestically as it did millions of years ago, guarding the Ha Tinh region against storms. Adding to the natural beauty are man-made structures; the Hong Linh mountain boasts invaluable historical and cultural relics, including many famous temples such as Huong Tich Pagoda, Thien Tuong Pagoda, Long Dam Pagoda, and Chan Tien Pagoda. Surrounding the Hong Linh mountain range are renowned villages, where for generations have emerged outstanding figures who have brought glory to the land and people of Ha Tinh, such as the father and son laureates Su Hy Nhan and Su Duc Huy, the Imperial Censor Bui Cam Ho, the great poet Nguyen Du, and the esteemed General Nguyen Cong Tru.
