The area around the former town of Sa Pa has suitable soil and climate for growing temperate vegetables. This has resulted in a large vegetable-growing region that yields high economic value. Most vegetable growing areas utilize high-tech production methods, such as: using greenhouse technology to reduce the use of pesticides, save fertilizers and irrigation water; equipping with automatic irrigation systems; and using high-yield, high-quality varieties. Stonecrop sprouts originate from China, but taking advantage of local conditions, many households have boldly converted their traditional winter vegetable fields to growing stonecrop sprouts. Each hectare of stonecrop sprout cultivation can yield an income of 400 million VND per year. Many households with significant investments can earn billions of VND annually from growing stonecrop sprouts.
The year 2025 brought great success to tomato growers as tomato prices peaked at over 50,000 VND/kg. Farmers in Sa Pa shared that growing tomatoes brings high economic value, exceeding 1 billion VND/hectare/year. In recent years, farmers in Sa Pa have quickly adopted the cultivation of baby cauliflower (a type of small-headed cauliflower). With the advantages of being easy to grow, high-yielding, and popular in the market, each hectare of baby cauliflower can generate an economic value of approximately 1 billion VND per year. Sa Pa is considered the capital of shiitake mushroom cultivation, boasting a large area and high production volume. Sa Pa shiitake mushrooms possess high medicinal and nutritional value, providing a substantial income for growers. However, investing in shiitake mushroom cultivation requires significant financial resources and modern technology.
Behind the economic profits lies the arduous labor of local farmers. Each successful vegetable crop represents sleepless nights, anxieties about unfavorable weather, and even crop failures and unquantifiable losses. But with love and perseverance, the farmers of Sa Pa remain attached to their land, making it "blossom." These multi-million dollar vegetable gardens not only create economic value but also bring social value, providing stable jobs for many local ethnic minority workers, with an average income of 6-8 million VND per month. Vegetable farming is a strength of Sa Pa's agriculture . In recent years, the locality has implemented many policies to encourage agricultural production, especially the application of high technology, creating significant economic value, contributing to poverty reduction, and building a more developed Sa Pa.
