Taking readers on a fascinating journey of discovery about the most basic unit of life: the cell, “The Song of the Cell” begins with the first observations through the microscope in the 17th century to the revolutionary breakthroughs in modern medicine. Author Siddhartha Mukherjee takes readers through each important milestone in the history of science, bringing to life the images of pioneering scientists such as Robert Hooke – who named “cells” – or Antonie van Leeuwenhoek with his shocking discovery about the world of microorganisms.

Siddhartha Mukherjee does not write the book as a dry scientific publication, but instead integrates scientific knowledge with literary expression. Technical concepts such as cell membrane, nucleus, mitochondria or other organelles suddenly become vivid and easy to understand through clear and inspiring explanations. The author not only analyzes each structure, but also expands the view of how cells coordinate and interact to build a complete life - from tissues, organs to the entire human body.

From scientific guidance, the book brings readers to knowledge about medicine, diseases, and healing... As a cancer specialist, Siddhartha Mukherjee helps readers understand why when cells are disordered, the human body becomes sick. He points out complex but interventional mechanisms, thereby introducing advanced therapies such as gene therapy, immunotherapy, or using stem cells to regenerate damaged tissue - advances that are opening up great hope for the future of medicine.

The book also does not hesitate to raise ethical, social and philosophical questions – as humans move closer to the ability to intervene in the very foundations of life. Mukherjee writes in a rich, literary language that not only provides the reader with knowledge, but also draws them into a deep stream of thought about the nature of life, of consciousness and of humanity itself.

With “The Song of the Cells”, readers will not only see the world inside their bodies more clearly, but also feel the delicate, complex and magical beauty of life. This is a book for anyone who loves knowledge, longs to understand themselves and the world – a work that is both powerful in content and profound in emotion.

“The Song of the Cell” has been awarded many prestigious awards such as the PROSE Award for Excellence in Biological and Life Sciences and the Chautauqua Prize 2023, and was listed in the Notable Book list of The New York Times.

Siddhartha Mukherjee is a physician, cancer researcher, and Pulitzer Prize-winning author. Born in New Delhi, India, he studied at Stanford University, Oxford University (as a Rhodes Scholar), and Harvard Medical School. Mukherjee is currently an Associate Professor of Medicine at Columbia University and an oncologist at Columbia University Medical Center.

He is known for his ability to combine complex science with compelling storytelling, appealing to both specialist and general readers. His debut work, "The History of Cancer: Emperor of All Maladies" (2010), won the Pulitzer Prize for Nonfiction and was acclaimed for its erudition, depth, and humanity in exploring the history and nature of cancer.
