Crossing forests, crossing streams

Last weekend, we joined a trekking group conquering the Ta Giang grassland for two days and one night. At 5 am, the vehicle departed from Nha Trang City and traveled to Thanh Son commune to begin the journey. According to locals, to reach the Ta Giang grassland, besides going from Thanh Son commune, tourists can also take the route from Bidoup - Nui Ba National Park (Lam Dong province) downwards. Mr. Tran Huu Nghia (from Nha Trang) shared: “I have experienced and conquered several mountains in the province such as Co Tien and Hoang Ngu Son… After being introduced to Ta Giang by friends, I was determined to experience it because of its picturesque scenery. The most difficult part of this route is the section along the stream, which has many rocks and is slippery, so you need to be in good physical condition before going. In my opinion, for those who like to travel and explore nature, this is a place worth trying.”

There are sections where tourists walk entirely on rocks.
During the journey, tourists will have to cross streams many times.

Guided by Mr. Cao Van Bang, our guide and porter, the group began their trek, climbing mountains and crossing rocky streams. Our destination was located at an altitude of approximately 1,000 meters above sea level. The trekking route followed the Khe River up to the hilltop. The round trip, about 23 kilometers long, was an exciting challenge for those who love exploring nature. The best time to go is from February to September each year; from October to December is the rainy season, so the river is high and impassable. The group followed the Khe River – the border between Ninh Thuan and Khanh Hoa provinces – winding along the trail, listening to the gentle sound of the flowing water like a soothing melody. During this season, the river isn't very deep, but there are still many fast-flowing sections, so travelers must be careful when crossing as there are rocks of all sizes underneath. Some sections require walking entirely on rocks, so careful observation is necessary. For the first 6km, visitors will cross several cool, clear streams where the bottom is visible. In some sections, the streams form natural pools where visitors can swim and relax in the cool water.

Immerse yourself in nature.

Along the way, there's a small local stall selling drinks to cater to tourists' needs. If you don't have enough water, you can buy bottled water there. Afterwards, continue through the green forest, learning about the different types of trees; admiring and taking pictures with ancient trees and romantic bamboo groves... After overcoming the last slope, tourists will arrive at the campsite. The Ta Giang grassland appears lush green like a beautiful painting. The picturesque and romantic campsite is located in the middle of the valley, surrounded by the green of grass, mountains, and the sky. Here, there are services such as tent rental, food and drinks, and showers... It gets very cold in the evening, so you need to prepare warm clothes to wear.

With no phone signal or Wi-Fi here, visitors can immerse themselves in nature, watch the sunset and sunrise, and enjoy dishes prepared by the local people. The lush green vegetation, clear streams, and vast grasslands create a unique beauty in Ta Giang, attracting many tourists to explore. Mr. Dang Tran Thuc, a tourist from Ho Chi Minh City, said: “My group of 20 members participated in the Ta Giang trekking trip. The route wasn't difficult, going through the forest and many cool streams, so everyone enjoyed it. After more than 10 hours of trekking, the majestic and pristine mountain scenery unfolded before our eyes, which was truly beautiful. There were many rocky streams along the way – this is something special that you won't find elsewhere.”

According to Mr. Bang, currently, all-inclusive tours exploring Ta Giang cost from 1.8 to 2.7 million VND per person, depending on whether you depart from Khanh Hoa or Ho Chi Minh City. Each tour has at least 3 guests, with one porter carrying about 20kg and assisting 1 to 3 guests throughout the journey. The porters are mostly local people, and this work has helped them earn an additional income of 1.2 million VND per trip. “Besides being porters, some locals also carry food and drinks to the campsite to serve tourists, thus earning extra money to cover their living expenses. Therefore, I hope tourism in Ta Giang will develop further so that the lives of the local people will be improved,” Mr. Bang shared.

Ta Giang grassland attracts many tourists from both within and outside the province to check in.

If you have the opportunity to visit the mountainous district of Khánh Sơn, try conquering the Tà Giang River to admire the lush green meadows and immerse yourself in the cool, refreshing streams hidden amidst the vast mountains and forests.
