To comfort and encourage their children, and to prevent unfortunate consequences when they "think irrationally and act recklessly," parents should be their children's confidants during the period when they receive their exam results and fail, or do not get accepted into university or college.
Parents should absolutely never scold their children or use insulting language like "you're so stupid, what can you possibly achieve?" or "studying and taking exams is a waste of time and money." Instead, they should encourage and comfort their children to alleviate their sadness. Tell them: "You're young, failing the exam is just a setback in your early life, and you'll have many more opportunities to correct your mistakes in the next exam year..."
Parents can also guide and direct their children's exam preparation plans for the following year, while instilling hope in them with statements like: "Dad and Mom believe that if you invest 5-7 months in thoroughly reviewing the material, you will definitely pass the next exam with a high score!"; or: "Talent and luck go hand in hand. Don't be sad, quickly overcome your disappointment, focus on studying, and consider this failure as motivation to strive for success next year."
In reality, many parents, upon discovering their child has failed an exam, harshly scold and berate them, making the already sad child even more disheartened. These reproaches, insults, and reprimands from parents during a time of sadness are like adding fuel to the fire, leaving the child feeling even more hopeless and without a way to cope.
Encouraging, comforting, sharing, and expressing feelings and aspirations with your child when they are overwhelmed with sadness because they failed an exam is something all parents should and need to do. This is the most effective way to help your child feel less sad and avoid regrettable consequences if they think and act rashly.
