
The Thai ethnic people of Nam Xuan commune perform cultural shows for tourists .
The village of But has 106 households with over 480 inhabitants, with the Thai ethnic group accounting for more than 95% of the village's population. The village is located in a valley with a cool climate and beautiful scenery, featuring the large Pha Day lake and glimpses of traditional stilt houses.
Here, visitors can immerse themselves in a pristine, airy environment and experience dishes rich in the culinary culture of the Thai ethnic group, such as five-colored sticky rice, grilled stream fish, steamed fish, free-range pork, fish salad, bamboo-cooked rice, and rice dumplings. At night, they can enjoy a campfire, drink rice wine, watch traditional Thai dances and songs, and relax in traditional stilt houses. During the rice harvest season, visitors can admire the breathtakingly beautiful terraced rice fields.
In recent years, Nam Xuan commune has promoted and encouraged households in the village with the means to invest capital in renovating and building stilt houses, purchasing equipment to develop community tourism, and increasing family income. Currently, But village has 5 households participating in homestay activities, and the village welcomes nearly 10,000 tourists annually.
Ms. Pham Thi Tuyet, a resident involved in tourism in But village, said: "In 2020, my family renovated our traditional stilt house to provide accommodation services. In 2023, due to the increase in the number of guests, we invested in building another stilt house, purchasing equipment, and improving the landscape to better serve the needs of visitors. Thanks to providing tourism services, my family has additional income and created jobs for six workers."
Party branch secretary and village head, But Ha Cong Chuc, shared: "The village has established groups to serve tourism activities such as: food, arts and culture, guest reception, security and order, and environmental sanitation. With the development of eco-tourism and community-based tourism, the village's environmental landscape is better protected, the traditional cultural values of the Thai ethnic people are preserved and promoted; agricultural products are easily sold. The material and spiritual lives of the people are increasingly improved, the average income reaches 42 million VND/person/year, and the poverty rate has decreased to 3.7%."
To preserve and promote the traditional cultural values of the Thai ethnic group, Nam Xuan commune has directed villages inhabited by the Thai ethnic group to intensify propaganda efforts to raise awareness among the people, encouraging them to work together with local Party committees and authorities to preserve and promote these traditional cultural values. The commune has restored and promoted many traditional crafts of the Thai ethnic group, such as brocade weaving, rice wine distillation using leaf yeast, and basket weaving. Traditional folk dances such as the Luong dance, Xoe dance, and Sap dance of the Thai ethnic group, along with folk songs, are practiced by the commune's performing arts groups to serve local political activities and the needs of tourists.
According to Ha Thi Bich, Head of the Culture and Social Affairs Department of Nam Xuan Commune: "The traditional cultural values of the Thai ethnic group have a strong influence on the lives of the people, promoting the 'All people unite to build a cultured life' movement. In the coming time, the commune will continue to focus on restoring and staging folk songs and dances for performing arts groups to serve the needs of tourists. We will mobilize resources to build cultural institutions to serve the community activities of the people. Through this, we will contribute to preserving and promoting the cultural identity of the Thai ethnic group, enriching the spiritual life of the ethnic people in the commune."
