Barcelona are very close to winning the 2025/26 La Liga title. |
La Liga enters its final five rounds with the top teams almost decided. Barcelona are close to winning the title, while Villarreal hold a significant advantage for third place.
The two capital city teams, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, are predicted to finish in second and fourth place respectively. However, behind them lies a fierce battle for European cup qualification and relegation survival.
A host of teams such as Oviedo, Levante, Sevilla, Girona, Alaves, Mallorca, Elche, Espanyol, Valencia, and Rayo Vallecano are still fighting tooth and nail in the survival race. The small point difference means that any mistake will be costly.
The spotlight of the next round will be on Espanyol hosting Real Madrid in the early hours of May 4th. The home team is currently in 12th place, but only 5 points above the relegation zone.
With five rounds remaining in the season, their current position is not yet safe. Espanyol must earn points to avoid being dragged back into the relegation zone.
Conversely, Real Madrid are 14 points behind Barcelona and have played one fewer game. If they fail to beat Espanyol, the Royal team will officially end their hopes of winning the championship.
A draw would only narrow the gap to 13 points, with four rounds remaining in the season. This scenario would mean Barcelona could be crowned champions early without needing to worry about the results of the remaining matches.
The pressure is therefore on both sides. Espanyol are fighting to avoid relegation, while Real Madrid must cling to their last glimmer of hope. Just one slip-up and all the plans of coach Alvaro Arbeloa's team will collapse, and they will hand the championship to Barca four rounds early.
