Pep Guardiola has begun to drop notable signals about his future, just before his final match as Manchester City manager. After a decade of resounding success at Etihad, the Spanish strategist has confirmed he will retire, but has not ruled out the possibility of managing the England national team in the future.
During his farewell press conference at Man City, Guardiola was asked if he was interested in the England national team manager position. Instead of denying it, the former Barcelona manager gave a rather cryptic answer.
"I don't have any specific plans for the future," Guardiola said, "I want to rest, spend time with my family and do things I've never had the chance to do before."
However, when the reporter pressed him on whether that meant he wasn't ruling out the possibility of managing England, Guardiola replied curtly: "Yes, but nobody cares."
This statement immediately sparked much speculation in England, given that Guardiola has long been considered one of the few managers capable of elevating the "Three Lions" in major tournaments. After many years dedicated to club football, the 55-year-old strategist is also believed to be more interested in the national team environment in the twilight of his career.
Guardiola will leave Manchester City after the 2025/26 season, bringing to a close the most glorious period in the club's history with a string of Premier League and Champions League titles, and the historic treble in the 2022/23 season. Beyond the discussion of his future, Guardiola also once again spoke out in defense of Manchester City as the club awaits a ruling on 115 allegations of financial misconduct from the Premier League.
While England are still aiming for the 2026 World Cup under Thomas Tuchel, Guardiola's statement clearly gives fans in England more reason to dream of a special future.
