Mr. Sach (People's Artist Trung Anh, left) and Trien (Manh Truong).
The film's plot revolves around Viet Dong province during the period of consolidation and streamlining of its administrative apparatus. The transition between the old and new system is marked by numerous conflicts. Secretary Tran Son (People's Artist Trong Trinh), Standing Deputy Secretary Le Dinh Sach (People's Artist Trung Anh), and Chairman Nguyen Van Thuy (Meritorious Artist Pham Cuong) each have their own directions and policies for the new system.
While personnel matters remain unresolved, Viet Dong province is plagued by several major cases involving personnel at multiple levels. The case of organized gambling involving billions of dong, led by Vien (Doan Quoc Dam), is becoming increasingly complex with the complicity of some local officials. Meanwhile, the Trinh Tam apartment project reveals numerous irregularities: stalled land ownership certificates, distorted planning… Khac (Tien Loc), Deputy Director of the Department of Construction, a close associate of Mr. Sach, along with several others, are drawn into the maelstrom of these cases. Khac is being nominated by Mr. Sach for the new personnel list; Mr. Thuy is proposing Trien (Manh Truong), Chief of the Committee Office; while Mr. Son is making his own decisions and closely monitoring the two cases…
In this context, Bui Hang Thu (Hong Diem), Deputy Chief Prosecutor and the person directly overseeing both cases, faces immense pressure and lurking dangers. As she delves deeper into the investigation, Hang Thu and her colleagues uncover heartbreaking truths: from low-ranking inspectors to those in positions of power, anyone can be entangled in legal troubles, including close acquaintances...
"The Dividing Line" is a political drama addressing the issues of corruption, abuse of power for personal gain, cronyism, cover-ups, and protectionism. The film tells a dramatic yet humane story about the fight against corruption and cronyism, while simultaneously honoring the courage, steadfastness, and integrity of those working in law enforcement agencies. Hang Thu and her colleagues not only face pressure from power and public opinion but also confront the dilemma of choosing between stopping the investigation for advancement or continuing to uphold justice.
Although it's a political drama, "The Dividing Line" isn't dry; it has its own unique appeal with a story that has many layers and mysterious connections. The film shows that the appointment, transfer, and arrangement of personnel are not just administrative procedures but a measure of ethics, transparency, and a decision that determines the future of the entire system. The restructuring process is also a purification, a self-reflection and self-correction of qualities, ethics, and responsibility. This creates many dividing lines between good and bad, right and wrong, merit and demerit…
The appeal of "The Dividing Line" also lies in its well-developed, multifaceted cast of characters. Each character faces a choice between justice and personal gain, and every decision demands self-reflection and a sense of responsibility towards the common good. The film features a cast of veteran actors who deliver strong performances, contributing to the vivid portrayal of the characters.
