Chelsea's red card record

Coach Enzo Maresca expressed his shame at Chelsea's disciplinary problems, after his team won 4-3 against Wolves in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup in the early morning of October 30.

Although the Blues secured their place in the next round, striker Liam Delap’s red card left Maresca unhappy. The 21-year-old only came on in the second half but was quickly sent off after picking up two yellow cards in seven minutes.

Speaking after the match, the Italian coach was angry: "We received a very stupid and deserved red card. Situations like that are completely avoidable. When you get sent off like today, it's a shame. I told Liam many times to calm down, but he seemed to be playing for himself and wouldn't listen."

To date, Chelsea have received 6 red cards in just the last 9 matches - an alarming number and a record for a Premier League club when the season has not yet entered November.

Delap joined Chelsea from Ipswich last summer for £30m, expected to be part of Maresca's plans to rejuvenate the squad, but inconsistent form and a disastrous red card have seen the England striker face a wave of criticism.

The victory over Wolves in the early morning of October 30 helped Chelsea temporarily relieve pressure, but coach Maresca understands that the disciplinary issue needs to be rectified if "The Blues" want to aim for long-term goals this season.
