- More than just a health insurance card, family health insurance is also a safety net that gives people peace of mind when they are sick or ill. In recent years, thanks to the efforts of the Social Insurance Agency of Lang Son province, the health insurance policy has become increasingly integrated into daily life, aiming for universal health insurance coverage.

For over a year now, Mr. Nguyen Van Long, 58 years old, residing in Tam Thanh ward, has spent more time at the hospital than at home. He was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis – a rare disease – requiring long-term treatment at the Provincial General Hospital and several central-level medical facilities. His total treatment costs amounted to over 600 million VND, with the health insurance fund covering almost all of it. His wife, Mrs. Vu Thi Lan, shared: "When the doctor told me the hospital bills were tens of millions of VND each time, I was really worried. Thanks to the health insurance card, the amount we have to pay is very small, allowing us to continue treatment until now."
Mr. Long's case is just one of hundreds of thousands of people in Lang Son who receive health insurance support each year. According to the provincial Social Insurance agency, from the beginning of 2025 to the present, the entire province has seen over 923,000 visits for medical examinations and treatment using health insurance cards, with total expenditure exceeding 666 billion VND, an increase of 9.2% compared to the same period last year. These telling figures affirm that the health insurance policy is truly effective, helping people reduce the burden of medical costs and feel more secure when they unfortunately fall ill, especially in the context of rising medical service prices.
According to Mr. Hoang Manh Cuong, Deputy Director of the Provincial General Hospital, 95% of inpatients at the hospital have their treatment costs covered by health insurance. Many patients with high treatment costs, such as those requiring intensive care with mechanical ventilation, dialysis, cardiovascular intervention, and hemodialysis, have a large portion of their expenses covered by health insurance, helping them overcome difficulties and focus on treatment and recovery.
To spread the humanitarian significance of health insurance policies to the people, the provincial Social Insurance agency has recently intensified propaganda efforts and coordinated with various organizations and collection service providers to bring family health insurance policies to the people. As of the end of October 2025, the entire province had 679,443 people participating in health insurance, reaching 82.8% of the population.
Ms. Nong Thi Phuong Thao, Director of the Provincial Social Insurance Department, stated: Family health insurance not only helps people reduce medical costs but also contributes to building a healthy community and ensuring social security. During the 40-day peak period at the end of 2025, the provincial Social Insurance Department launched a final push to recruit over 49,000 new health insurance participants, prioritizing households without members and ensuring timely renewal of expiring cards.
To achieve that goal, local social insurance agencies have developed specific plans, coordinating with commune and ward authorities and associations to review eligible individuals and disseminate information through various methods such as small group meetings, consultations at households, and at transaction points. At the same time, the agency has strengthened the application of information technology, encouraging people to install the VssID application (digital social insurance application) to track their benefits and for convenience when seeking medical treatment.
Family health insurance policies are gradually asserting their position as a "social security shield" in every household. When each citizen actively participates, not only are they and their families protected, but they also contribute to strengthening a solid social security foundation for society.
