Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga in the music video for "Die with a Smile".
If we're talking about the strangest pop music moments of the 2010s, we certainly can't forget Bruno Mars and a group of dancers wearing monkey masks, shirts, and sunglasses, nodding and singing along to "I don't feel like doing anything today. I just want to lie in bed..." in the music video for "The Lazy Song".
And of course, we can't forget the image of Lady Gaga in a bizarre white rubber suit emerging from a white cocoon-like structure resembling a coffin in the music video for Bad Romance.
Die with a Smile is a love song.
When the music video for "Die with a Smile" was released, everyone was surprised. It had been several years since either of them had released a new song.
Especially with Lady Gaga, people thought she was focusing all her efforts on promoting Joker: Folie à Deux, which will premiere at the Venice Film Festival this September, a film in which she will appear as Harley Quinn, making everyone eagerly anticipate its release.
Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars - Die With A Smile (Official Music Video )
We were also surprised that Die with a Smile is a love song, a somewhat nostalgic soul ballad, not bizarre, not shocking, not unique or unconventional enough to immediately stick in the listener's memory.
Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars were on stage, Mars wearing a cowboy hat and holding a guitar, Gaga sporting a signature 1960s beehive hairstyle, with a cigarette in her mouth and playing the piano.
They sing the heartfelt declarations of love from a couple envisioning a day when Earth is destroyed and humanity's glorious celebration finally comes to an end. It all seems so ordinary, yet there's something unparalleled about that music video.
Because all the ordinary elements here are perfect: Bruno Mars' poignant crooning passages; Lady Gaga's vocals, a whirlwind of color—at times fierce, at times sweet—the absolute harmony and mutual enhancement between two leading voices; the way Lady Gaga suddenly rises from the piano and begins to dance alone.
And of course, the powerful melody and universal lyrics about love foreshadow that this song will be played and listened to repeatedly by listeners, becoming more and more relatable with each listen.
The song's lyrics are somewhat reminiscent of the final images in the official Joker trailer: Folie à Deux, where Lady Gaga's Harley Quinn and Joaquin Phoenix's Joker – two madmen who see the world as a stage for their insane antics – sing a classic gospel song, Get Happy, specifically this line:
"Sing Hallelujah! Come on, be happy! Get ready for Judgment Day." Both works allude to the end of the world, only one is endlessly romantic, the other dark and chaotic.
And if the new Joker film revolving around Joker and Harley Quinn is called Folie à Deux - madness in pairs, then with Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga, can we call it good in pairs?
Lady Gaga and her unexpected collaboration with Bruno Mars.
Over the years, Lady Gaga's most memorable releases have all been those in pairs.
Her most recent solo studio albums, such as Joanne (2016) and Chromatica (2020), haven't been as explosive as expected. The bigger impact comes from her jazz standard duet albums with Tony Bennett and their long-standing friendship.
Her biggest hit in recent years is the ballad "Shallow" from the movie "A Star Is Born," which she sang as a duet with Bradley Cooper, and their chemistry was so strong that fans eagerly shipped them as a couple.
And now there are two more collaborations: the highly anticipated collaboration with Joaquin Phoenix in the Joker sequel and the "heavenly" collaboration with Bruno Mars. There are even rumors of her impending collaboration with Beyoncé – a partnership that will go down in history.
Lady Gaga may have passed her peak, her most vibrant, and her most successful period in music, but spiritually speaking, the "blessing" of her friends is something everyone envies.
