On December 6, Variety held the Variety Hitmakers 2025 event to honor the artists, producers and individuals behind the series of songs that took the world by storm this year.
This year's ceremony marks the release of the annual Hitmakers issue, which celebrates the 25 most popular songs of the year and the people behind them, from artists, producers, to creative collaborators.
Rosé (BlackPink) emotionally received the award
This year, Rosé (BlackPink) won the Global Hitmaker of the Year award thanks to the APT. fever in collaboration with Bruno Mars, marking the first time a K-pop idol was honored at this event.
In her speech, Rosé shared that her career in recent years has taken an unexpected turn. The explosion of the super hit APT. has helped Rosé gain international recognition, which sometimes makes her feel overwhelmed.
Officially released in October 2024, APT. is the lead single from Rosé's debut solo album Rosie .

APT. was inspired by the famous Korean game "Apartment Game". With its addictive melody and simple, repetitive lyrics, the song quickly took the world by storm, becoming a trend on social networks and digital music platforms.
The music video for “APT.” has now surpassed 2.1 billion views on YouTube in just 225 days, setting a new record for an Asian artist. On Billboard, the song spent 34 weeks on the Hot 100, the longest streak for a solo K-pop artist.
The success of APT. helped Rosé receive her first nominations in major Grammy categories, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
Also received the Daesang Song of the Year award at MAMA 2025 - one of Korea's top awards ceremonies.
Also at Variety Hitmakers 2025, many artists reminisced about their music-making journeys. Sabrina Carpenter, who received the Hitmaker of the Year award, said she wrote her first song at the age of 10.

Tate McRae has been composing in his bedroom since he was 13, while EJAE of the group Huntr/x from the K-pop drama Demon Hunters started at the age of 10.
Blues legend Buddy Guy, now 89, recalls his poor childhood in rural Louisiana, where his family filtered rainwater for use: "There must be something special about that water because I drank it all the time and I'm still this healthy."
Alex Warren, the man behind the smash hit "Ordinary," won Breakthrough Artist of the Year. In his acceptance speech, he spoke about losing his father at the age of nine and the struggles he faced afterward. His debut album , "You'll Be Alright, Kid," forced him to confront memories he wanted to forget.

"I'm enough. I'm doing what I'm supposed to do. I'm here for a reason and I deserve to be here," he said.
In hip-hop, BigXthaPlug was named Hip-Hop Breakthrough of the Year, representing the spirit of independent music and artist ownership. The Marías received the Upstream Hit Group of the Year award for staying true to their musical identity.
