From a mountainous province facing numerous challenges in infrastructure, geographical distance, and development conditions, the province is proactively seeking new growth potential through modern development thinking, innovation, and strategic infrastructure investment. Key transportation projects, concentrated commodity production areas, and many other projects are opening up new expectations for achieving double-digit growth targets.

Infrastructure synchronization

To achieve double-digit growth, Lai Chau province has demonstrated strong political determination, quickly concretizing its goals through numerous comprehensive programs, plans, and solutions; among which, transportation infrastructure is considered a crucial foundation. In less than a year, a series of road projects in this remote area have taken shape. Looking at strategic projects such as the Bao Ha - Lai Chau expressway (CT.13); the road tunnel through Hoang Lien Pass; investment in the renovation and upgrading of several sections of major national highways (4H, 4D, and National Highway 12 connecting to the Ma Lu Thang border gate); and the road connecting Lai Chau with the Noi Bai-Lao Cai expressway… shows the significant efforts and breakthroughs of the provincial government.

The Hoang Lien Pass Tunnel project, connecting Sa Pa ward in Lao Cai province with Binh Lu commune in Lai Chau province, is a Group A project. According to the plan, the project has a total investment of approximately 3,300 billion VND and a total length of nearly 8.8 km. The project, scheduled for completion in 2027, will replace approximately 22 km of treacherous mountain pass roads, reducing travel time from 50-120 minutes to just 11 minutes. The project will also boost logistics capacity through the Ma Lu Thang border gate, connecting major economic centers such as Hanoi and Hai Phong with the northern border region.

Another key transportation project that Lai Chau province is focusing on accelerating in May is the Bao Ha - Lai Chau Expressway Project (CT.13).

Lai Chau: Over 3,000 people registered to participate in the 2026 "Drop of Red Blood on the Da River" blood donation festival.(laichau.gov.vn) This morning (June 2nd), in Lai Chau province, the Central Organizing Committee of the Red Journey program, in coordination with the Lai Chau Provincial Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation, organized the 14th Red Journey program, the 9th "Drop of Red Blood on the Da River" blood donation festival, and honored outstanding blood donors in Lai Chau province in 2026. At the program, over 3,000 people registered to donate blood, with the goal of collecting more than 1,000 units of blood.

People in the province are very hopeful about this key transportation project. Ms. Le Thi Hoai (Tan Phong ward) shared: “My hometown is in Nghe An, and I have been working in Lai Chau for nearly 20 years. Every time I go back home, traveling is very difficult. When the province received investment for the Bao Ha - Lai Chau Expressway Project (CT.13), my family was very happy. We hope the project will be completed soon so that travel will be more convenient, shortening the distance with the lowland provinces, and giving people more opportunities for economic development.”

Along with major transportation projects, the province also prioritizes investment in inter-regional infrastructure, roads to production areas, tourist areas, and border communes. The expansion of rural roads has contributed to promoting the development of a commodity-based economy, facilitating trade and consumption of agricultural products for the people, and developing community tourism.

Promoting growth through the green economy.

While Lai Chau's economic growth previously relied primarily on hydropower and traditional agriculture, the province is now moving towards a green, sustainable growth model, linked to science and technology and digital transformation.

Mr. Lo Van Sau's family (in Ma Quai Thang village) previously mainly cultivated cassava, but later boldly switched a portion of their land to tea cultivation, bringing in a stable income. Recently, after converting over 1,000 square meters of land previously used for corn cultivation, he continued to grow ginger, following the local government's guidance. After more than a month since planting, the ginger plants are developing well, raising hopes for a new direction in the family's economic development. This model is part of the project supporting the development of Se Lai ginger cultivation under Sub-project 1, Project 9 of the National Target Program for socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas in 2026. His family is one of 207 households in four villages: Xa Chai, Xa Chai 1, Phin Ho, and Ma Quai Thang participating, with a total area of 26.4 hectares.

Lai Châu also boasts specialty rice, tea, cinnamon, macadamia nuts, fruit trees, cage fish farming on hydroelectric reservoirs, beekeeping, and medicinal herb cultivation under forest canopy. This provides a solid foundation for achieving double-digit growth.

The aspiration for 10% growth is being concretized through strong movements from the provincial level to the grassroots. Achieving that goal requires many synchronized and breakthrough solutions from the provincial to the grassroots level to build a foundation for sustainable development for Lai Chau in the future.

The entire province has over 520 hectares of crops cultivated according to food safety and hygiene standards, including 240 hectares certified VietGAP; nearly 50 hectares certified organic; nearly 15 hectares certified GACP; 43 hectares of greenhouses and net houses implementing closed-loop production to minimize pests and diseases, eliminating the need for pesticides and reducing fertilizer use; over 3,000 hectares of commercial rice applying improved rice cultivation techniques and integrated crop health management; 33% of large-scale livestock farms have waste treatment systems using biogas and biological bedding...
