Housework and sports are two of the most common causes of eye injuries. Even cooking or playing with your dog or cat can result in an eye injury. You may experience symptoms right away, or they may begin and become more apparent hours after the injury.

Some common symptoms of an eye abrasion include: Eye pain, a feeling that something is stuck in the eye, and watery eyes. During an examination, your doctor may notice a spot of blood, a scratched line, or a red area on the conjunctiva or sclera.

If you have a scratch on your cornea – the clear, round part of the front of your eye that covers the iris and pupil – your symptoms can be more serious: Blurred vision, sensitivity to light, headaches. This can permanently affect your vision. So see an eye doctor right away if you have severe pain, difficulty seeing, or are concerned about your eye. If necessary, go to the nearest emergency room.

2. Can a scratched eye heal on its own?

Sometimes scratches heal on their own. Most eye scratches, including corneal scratches, are minor and heal within a few days, but you should still see a doctor to get them checked out.

Do not use any eye drops without consulting your doctor. There are no over-the-counter eye drops specifically for eye abrasions. Your eye doctor may prescribe antibiotic eye drops or ointment to prevent infection. In some cases, steroid eye drops may be prescribed to reduce inflammation and reduce the risk of scarring.

3. How should eye scratches be treated?

Some dos and don'ts:

Should:

• Rinse eyes with clean water or saline solution; you can use a small, clean glass cup: Place the rim of the cup on the orbital bone under the lower eyelid, blink continuously to let the water push the foreign object out.

• Blink frequently to remove small particles.

• Wear sunglasses if your eyes are sensitive to light.

Rubbing your eyes can make the scratch worse.

Don't:

• Rub your eyes, as this may make the scratch worse.

• Do not touch your eyes with anything such as your hands or cotton swabs as this may cause further damage.

• Wear contact lenses until your eyes are completely healed.

• Use over-the-counter eye drops, which can be painful and do not help the scratch heal faster.

You should see a doctor to have the scratch on your eye checked.

4. How long does it take for a scratched eye to heal?

Eyes usually heal quickly, but recovery time depends on the extent of the damage. Your eye doctor will evaluate you and give you an estimated recovery time after your examination.

Ask your doctor: How long does the pain last? What activities should you avoid while your eye heals?

If symptoms last longer than your doctor expected or get worse, contact your doctor immediately for prompt treatment.
