On a weekend evening, Ms. Tran Nguyen Chuc Lam, a resident of Long Xuyen ward, was browsing her phone watching a live stream of clothing clearance on TikTok. When the seller introduced beach dresses, shirts, or summer handbags, Ms. Lam quickly commented to "seal the deal" on the items she liked.

According to Ms. Lam, many second-hand items, even though used, are still in good condition, have trendy designs, and are much cheaper than new ones. She's preparing for a trip with friends, so she prioritizes choosing second-hand items to save money. “Second-hand clothes usually have limited quantities and unique designs. However, I'm quite careful in choosing sellers of used clothing to minimize risks. Recently, my sister and I took some commemorative photos from our school days. Ordering or buying new ao dai (traditional Vietnamese dress) at this time is difficult, so I chose to buy a used ao dai from another seller. Even though it's a used ao dai, it looks very new, beautiful, and fits my figure perfectly,” Ms. Lam said.
Mr. Nguyen Hoang Vuong, residing in Son Kien commune, also chooses to buy second-hand clothes through specialized online sales accounts on Facebook. “I prioritize reputable second-hand sellers because they describe the product condition, material, and size quite thoroughly. Buying online is also more convenient because I can view many items at once, especially summer clothing like shirts, t-shirts, or shorts,” Mr. Vuong said.
Mr. Vuong chose to buy second-hand clothes online instead of in-store because he could find many products from famous brands at "affordable" prices. According to Mr. Vuong, a shirt from foreign brands, which costs around 700,000 - 1 million VND new, can cost around 150,000 - 300,000 VND used, and the quality is still quite good. This is a way for him to buy nice clothes that suit his needs without spending too much money.
Although a fan of second-hand items, Ms. Huynh Truc Mai, residing in My Thoi ward, often follows the social media accounts of KOLs, KOCs, or people with similar fashion styles to "hunt" for discounted items. According to Ms. Mai, following KOLs and KOCs on social media also helps her learn more about how to mix and match outfits and accessories through the images and videos they have previously posted.
“I often wait for people with fashion styles I admire to sell off their clothes and accessories so I can buy them. This makes it easier for me to choose outfits that suit my personal style instead of having to search in many stores. Buying secondhand items online saves me travel time, and many sellers even offer free shipping, so it’s quite convenient for students during the summer,” Mai said.
Many young people choose to buy second-hand items as a cost-saving solution. While in the past, most young people tended to prioritize new products, nowadays they are more open to used items, as long as they suit their needs and personal style.
On the other hand, the development of e-commerce and online shopping helps consumers choose reliable places to buy and sell, ensuring quality and saving time and money. Not limited to clothing, the buying and selling of used goods has expanded to many other items such as accessories, books, technology products, and personal items, attracting a large number of young people.
