From fruit-growing regions to tourist destinations
The roads leading to the orchards in Lam Son commune are busier than usual these days. Under the lush green durian trees, people are busy weeding, pruning branches, and tidying up the pathways. In many orchards, rest stops, photo areas, and product information boards are also being completed. Unlike before, many orchard owners are now not just thinking about selling fruit. They are preparing experiences so that tourists can firsthand discover the production life of this mountainous rural area.

Following last year's festival, noticing that many visitors expressed their delight at being able to see the orchards firsthand, hear about the cultivation process, and directly enjoy the fruit, Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh, the owner of a durian orchard in Tan Binh village, has invested in additional facilities to enhance the experience, from pathways and resting areas to points introducing the production process. "Nowadays, visitors to the orchard don't just want to buy fruit to take home. They want to understand how farmers produce the products, experience the rural atmosphere, and feel the life in the countryside. Therefore, I try to prepare meticulously so that visitors have the most complete experience," Mr. Thanh shared.
Not only local households, but also the two tourism cooperatives in the commune are actively developing experiential programs for tourists. According to the plan, the festival will include many new activities such as guided tours of the gardens, the "Go to the garden - into the kitchen - receive gifts" program, miniature fruit gardens, creative workshops for children, a culinary demonstration space, and many other community-based experiential activities.

Located at the western gateway of Khanh Hoa province, Lam Son commune has long been known as a major fruit-producing area. Favorable climate conditions and a stable water supply have helped many types of fruit trees such as durian, mangosteen, jackfruit, and mango thrive, bringing significant income to the local people. In recent years, along with improving product quality, the locality has begun to focus on exploiting the tourism value of its orchards. Many households have opened their doors to visitors, allowing them to experience fruit harvesting, enjoy local dishes, and learn about agricultural production. It is from these still-spontaneous models that the idea of building the Lam Son Fruit and Food Festival was formed and gradually became an annual event of the locality.
Expectations for a Western-style brand.
According to the plan of the People's Committee of the commune, this year's Fruit and Food Festival will be organized on a provincial scale, taking place from July 17th to 19th at the football field of Da Nhim - Ham Thuan - Da Mi Hydropower Joint Stock Company. The highlight of the festival is the exhibition space for OCOP products and specialty products with 12 booths from localities, businesses, and cooperatives inside and outside the province. Besides My Son, Anh Dung, Bac Ai Tay, Khanh Son, and Dong Khanh Son communes, the festival will also include participation from localities in Lam Dong province such as Don Duong and Ka Do communes. The participation of agricultural production areas in the region promises to create a more diverse space for exchange, connection, and promotion of products for locals and tourists.

From orchards to the commune center, preparations for the festival are accelerating daily. Subcommittees are tasked with urgently finalizing communication, stage setup, stalls, and plans for electricity supply, security, traffic safety, and environmental sanitation. Simultaneously, political and social organizations are actively mobilizing people to participate in promoting local cuisine, introducing distinctive products, and developing experiential activities, contributing to creating a festival space that reflects the unique identity of Lam Son countryside.
Mr. Nguyen Hoang Tien, Vice Chairman of the Lam Son Commune People's Committee, said: “The 2nd Lam Son Fruit and Food Festival in 2026 is an opportunity for the locality to promote the image of its characteristic fruit-growing region, connect agricultural product consumption, and create more impetus for the development of agricultural tourism. Through the festival, we hope to introduce to tourists a Lam Son rich in cultural identity; at the same time, it opens up more opportunities for people, cooperatives, and businesses to link production, enhance product value, and develop the local economy. To date, preparations are being implemented on schedule, ensuring the conditions for the festival to take place safely, effectively, and leave a good impression on people and tourists.”

As evening falls over the orchards in their fruiting season, plump durians grove under the green foliage, clusters of ripening fruit gradually coloring the hillsides. The rhythmic sound of lawnmowers echoes through the gardens, signaling that preparations are entering a crucial phase. When the festival opens, the orchards of Lam Son will be wide open to welcome visitors from afar. Along with the sweet harvest, the people here are hoping to build a new brand for their homeland: a destination for agricultural tourism in the western mountainous region of Khanh Hoa.
Lam Son is one of the major fruit-growing areas in western Khanh Hoa province. According to 2025 statistics, the entire commune has over 620 hectares of fruit trees, with many key crops such as jackfruit (approximately 201 hectares), durian (85.7 hectares), persimmon (84 hectares), mangosteen (76.5 hectares), and banana (58.7 hectares). In addition, mangoes and other tropical fruit trees occupy a large area, creating concentrated production zones linked to the development of orchard-based economic activities. This is also an important resource for the locality to develop experiential tourism models, orchard tours, and promote distinctive agricultural products in the future.
