The Sam Son Ward Red Cross Society, along with benefactors, provided assistance to the family of Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai.
On her old bicycle, Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai, from Minh Cat residential area, Sam Son ward, daily carries her two young children along the streets of Sam Son ward to earn a living. Suffering from a mild mental illness, and without a husband, she has been raising four children alone, making her life a constant struggle for many years. Her two older children are cared for by their maternal grandfather in a rented room near Quang Cu market in Sam Son ward. At times, she and her children have to sleep on sidewalks and in public building corridors; the children frequently fall ill due to the lack of proper living conditions. Given her extremely difficult circumstances, the Sam Son Ward Red Cross Society connected with and mobilized benefactors to provide 15 million VND in support, helping Ms. Mai to temporarily overcome her immediate difficulties.
This is one of the difficult circumstances in the ward that received support during the Humanitarian Month. Ms. Vu Thi Hien, President of the Sam Son Ward Red Cross Society, said: “With the motto of openness, transparency, and targeting the right beneficiaries, the society has proactively reviewed and thoroughly understood the circumstances of each case to connect resources for assistance. This transparency has created trust and attracted many organizations, businesses, and people to participate in humanitarian activities.”
In 2026, Sam Son ward implemented two phases of the Humanitarian Month, raising nearly 960 million VND in total. Resources were mobilized from agencies, units, businesses, religious organizations, philanthropists, and people both within and outside the locality. Specifically, the fundraising campaign for Humanitarian Month raised over 137.6 million VND. Of this amount, 41.3 million VND was transferred to the provincial-level Humanitarian Relief Fund; the remainder was added to the ward's Humanitarian Fund to continue supporting vulnerable groups in the area.
By mobilizing resources to build the fund, the Sam Son Ward Red Cross Society, in coordination with organizations, individuals, and philanthropists, has implemented humanitarian activities such as organizing free medical examinations, providing free medicine, and giving gifts to 105 patients in difficult circumstances with a total cost of 42 million VND; organizing visits and encouraging vulnerable people; supporting scholarships and providing wheelchairs for people with disabilities; assisting those who have suffered misfortunes and calamities; and raising funds to help orphaned students and poor children overcome difficulties...
From scholarships and support for critically ill patients to community health care activities, the Humanitarian Month in Sam Son ward has demonstrated the power of solidarity and compassion when awakened at the grassroots level. This spirit is also spreading strongly in many localities in the province. In Nong Cong commune, in response to the 2026 Humanitarian Month, the commune's Red Cross Society has mobilized more than 250 million VND from agencies, businesses, organizations, and benevolent individuals. This funding will be used to support poor households, elderly people living alone, children with special difficulties, and those facing unexpected risks after a thorough review and assessment of each individual. Mr. Truong Ba Hien, Chairman of the Nong Cong Commune Red Cross Society, said: "After mobilizing resources, the society will carefully review the difficult circumstances to develop appropriate support plans, ensuring that resources are used for the right purpose, transparently, and effectively."
Beyond immediate relief efforts, many Red Cross branches are now shifting towards more in-depth support, aiming to help people stabilize their lives in the long term. This is also the direction being pursued by Red Cross branches at all levels in the province. In response to the 2026 Humanitarian Month, themed "80 Years - A Journey of Compassion for the Community," Red Cross branches throughout the province organized many practical activities such as building humanitarian houses, providing livelihood support, free medical examinations and treatment, voluntary blood donation, and assistance for poor students. By the end of May 2026, the total resources mobilized during Humanitarian Month in the province reached over 14.4 billion VND, assisting approximately 26,600 people in difficult circumstances.
Mr. Nguyen Quoc Thanh, Chairman of the Thanh Hoa Provincial Red Cross Society, said: “The most important aspect of the Humanitarian Month is not only the resources mobilized but also the spread of the spirit of compassion in society. Through humanitarian activities, the Red Cross at all levels has connected many organizations, businesses, philanthropists, and people to work together to help those in difficult circumstances, contributing to the effective implementation of social welfare work.”
Through concrete actions at the grassroots level, the 2026 Humanitarian Month has further affirmed the bridging role of the Red Cross in social welfare work. More importantly, these acts of sharing are contributing to spreading the spirit of compassion, arousing community responsibility, and providing motivation for vulnerable people to rise up in life.
