The people of Phuong Vien flower village are tending to their flowers in preparation for supplying them to the market during the traditional Lunar New Year.

Leading us on a tour of several gardens being prepared for planting flowers for the Lunar New Year, alongside gardens that supply the market daily and are already in full bloom, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Nho, head of Phuong Vien flower and ornamental plant village, confided: "Previously, people in the area mainly relied on rice, corn, and vegetables. After learning the flower cultivation trade and realizing the higher income potential, many households boldly switched entirely to growing flowers and ornamental plants. In early 2010, Phuong Vien was recognized by the Provincial People's Committee as a flower and ornamental plant village, which facilitated the sale of products for the households."

The flower-growing area in Phuong Vien covers more than 5 hectares, with many different types of flowers such as roses, chrysanthemums, lilies, gerberas, peonies, and hyacinths. Many types of flowers have dozens of different varieties, such as chrysanthemums and roses, which are quite popular in the market. For a long time, fresh flowers from Phuong Vien village have been present at important holidays, festivals, and conferences both within and outside the province.

According to Mr. Nho, Phuong Vien flower village supplies the market with approximately 3.5 billion flowers of various types each year. Average revenue reaches over 3 billion VND per year, with Tet flowers being the main season generating the highest revenue.

Phuong Vien flower village in season for Tet (Lunar New Year)

The peach blossom trees for Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year) are being placed in pots, ready to be sold in the market.

Mr. Nguyen Van Dau, one of the flower growers in Phuong Vien village, said: "To have a successful Tet flower season, about three months before Tet, we start planting various flowers such as chrysanthemums, roses, lilies... As for peach blossoms, we start stripping the leaves in mid-November, then depending on the weather conditions, we use artificial lighting to ensure the flowers bloom at the right time for the traditional Tet holiday. Most importantly, when 'transplanting' the flowers from the garden to pots, for flowers like chrysanthemums, peonies, roses, marigolds... we must ensure that the plants remain healthy, with plump buds, without wilting or falling off, and without growing taller."

Beyond traditional sales methods, many households in Phuong Vien flower and ornamental plant village have applied information technology to find and expand their markets. A prime example is Mr. Nguyen Van Thang with his website “hoatuoithangthao.com”. Thanks to this website, his fresh flower business is quite successful, attracting many customers from Lai Chau, Son La, Tuyen Quang, and other provinces. Customers can choose a design and call or text to place an order, which Mr. Thang's family then delivers directly to their location. He prioritizes trustworthiness in business by regularly updating the website with beautiful flower designs and frequently exchanging information about quality and prices to facilitate the sale of fresh flowers and flower products.

Along with flower cultivation, ornamental plants are also a strength of the village, with many varieties having established a strong brand. Many reputable nurseries are members of the Thanh Thuy Ornamental Plants and Gardening Association. Besides supplying seedlings, these nurseries also create many artistic bonsai trees in various shapes and styles, from "one-armed," "two-armed," "three-armed," to "six-armed," possessing unique beauty and high aesthetic value. Currently, the trend is for many people to choose miniature ornamental plants to decorate their homes during Tet (Lunar New Year), adding diversity to the Tet flower and ornamental plant market.

Thanks to proactive efforts, flower cultivation in Phuong Vien village is increasingly developing, contributing to the preservation and promotion of the value of traditional crafts in the area, creating regular jobs and increasing income for local people.
