Relying on or utilizing intelligent AI?

For AI to become an effective work tool, we need to build a habit of "learning with AI" rather than "learning from AI."

On August 7-8, Google introduced Guided Learning on its Gemini platform – an "AI tutor" that can tailor lessons to each individual, analyze each step, explain with images, diagrams, and videos , and test with multiple-choice questions, aiming for "active learning" and improving upon the previous complaints about many AI chatbots "answering assignments" too quickly, leading to a decline in self-learning skills.

Many useful features

With Guided Learning, Google upgraded the entire Gemini suite to support deeper learning, including automatically inserting images and YouTube videos, creating flashcards, and developing curricula based on documents or test results. The AI Pro ecosystem includes NotebookLM (document summarization and analysis), Veo 3 (video processing), Deep Research (deep querying), and more.

OpenAI has also just launched ChatGPT-5, a version that CEO Sam Altman likened to a PhD-level expert. He stated that GPT-5 processes information much more accurately, reducing errors by 45% compared to GPT-4o and 80% compared to the o3 model. Notably, GPT-5 has "superpowers" in programming, taking less than 5 minutes to create a completely new large-scale language model. ChatGPT not only has Study Mode but also boasts a range of other features such as Canvas Mode (visual editing), Advanced Data Analysis (advanced data processing), integration with Sora to create AI videos, and o3 and o4-mini models for research. In addition, Microsoft Copilot has been integrated into Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; Anthropic Claude excels at reading and summarizing long documents; and Perplexity AI stands out for precise searching and source citation.

Not to be outdone, billionaire Elon Musk also launched Grok 4, which he calls " the world's smartest AI." Musk claims that if it were to take the SAT – the standardized test used for college admissions – it would score perfect marks every time, even surpassing most graduate students in any field.

Ms. Thu Trang, an office worker in Ho Chi Minh City, experienced ChatGPT's Study Mode to learn more about sales data analysis skills. The AI guided her step-by-step, asking questions to help her figure out the solutions herself, just like learning with a mentor.

Meanwhile, Minh Quan (from Ho Chi Minh City) used Google Gemini's Guided Learning to review his graphic design knowledge. "The AI explains things very visually with images and videos, helping me remember things better. However, when downloading long documents, the AI sometimes cuts the content into illogical parts, so I still have to rearrange it myself to get the appropriate answer," said Quan.

AI is becoming increasingly intelligent, but it needs to be used correctly to avoid becoming dependent on it.

Avoid dependence.

While AI tools are useful, many users also admit that overuse of AI sometimes makes them lazier. Hoang Hai, a fourth-year student at a university in Ho Chi Minh City, said: "Sometimes I 'ask' ChatGPT to solve my homework for me. However, if used for a long time without control, it's easy to become dependent and gradually lose the ability to analyze things independently."

A new study from the MIT Media Lab warns that the use of AI may reduce cognitive function. 54 volunteers were divided into three groups: using ChatGPT, searching on Google, and writing by hand. The results showed that the group using ChatGPT had the lowest levels of brain activity, was less efficient in terms of neuroscience, language, and behavior, and gradually became dependent on, or even copied verbatim, content processed by the AI.

Mr. Nguyen Van Thuc, CEO of Keystone Technology and Training Joint Stock Company, believes that AI is developing at an unprecedented pace, opening up many opportunities in learning and work. The biggest problem lies not in the technology itself, but in how people use it, as many are gradually becoming dependent on it and neglecting their own thinking process. According to Mr. Thuc, for AI to become an effective support tool, it is necessary to build the habit of "learning with AI" rather than "learning thanks to AI." This means users should let AI suggest, analyze, and guide them, but still find the final answer themselves. AI platforms should also design mechanisms to encourage active thinking, such as asking reverse questions, requiring users to explain or compare answers, instead of just providing complete results. "AI can be the most patient tutor, but if you let it 'do your homework for you,' learners will lose analytical and creative skills – elements that machines cannot completely replace," Mr. Thuc emphasized.

According to Mr. Phan Thanh Tung, a representative of an AI technology solutions company in Ho Chi Minh City, AI is increasingly becoming an essential part of learning and working. However, without the skills to filter and verify information, users can easily passively absorb it, leading to misunderstandings or rote application. Besides providing guidance on using the tools, schools and training organizations need to integrate critical thinking and technology management skills into their curricula. "Learners need to know when to seek AI assistance and when to analyze things themselves. They must know how to use AI intelligently to boost their thinking abilities, rather than taking shortcuts and neglecting the process of intellectual training," Mr. Tung noted.

Data leak

According to The Telegraph, over 500 private chats with ChatGPT containing sensitive information such as internal discussions, fraud, cyberattack plans, and questions from doctors and lawyers have appeared in Google search results. Researcher Henk van Ess said that approximately 110,000 other conversations are stored on the Wayback Machine – the Internet Archive's web archiving tool. Experts warn that this leak could be exploited by cybercriminals; users should not share confidential data with AI and urge developers to strengthen security to prevent similar incidents.
