Travel time from Ho Chi Minh City to Long Thanh Airport is now only 30 minutes: Accelerating metro and railway development.

Ho Chi Minh City is accelerating the metro and railway project connecting to Long Thanh Airport, aiming to shorten travel time to approximately 30 minutes, as stated by City Party Secretary Tran Luu Quang at a meeting with constituents.

On the afternoon of March 19th, at a press conference on the socio -economic situation in the city, Mr. Ly Thanh Long, Chief of the Office of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, provided information on the progress of metro and railway projects connecting Tan Son Nhat Airport with Long Thanh Airport.

A series of metro and railway projects are currently underway.

According to the Department of Construction, Ho Chi Minh City is focusing on accelerating investment preparation to soon commence construction of the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway line and the Suoi Tien - Dong Nai Provincial Administrative Center - Long Thanh Airport metro line. These lines will directly connect the inner-city metro network with Long Thanh Airport.

Construction on Metro Line 2 (Ben Thanh - Tham Luong section) commenced on January 15, 2026. The relocation of technical infrastructure is expected to be completed in 2026. The construction units aim to complete the entire project and put the line into operation by 2030.

Regarding Metro Line 2 (Ben Thanh - Thu Thiem), aimed at directly connecting Ho Chi Minh City's inner-city metro system with Long Thanh Airport, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee approved the Truong Hai Group ( THACO ) to conduct a feasibility study and prepare a report starting from January 26th. Accordingly, the project is expected to commence before April 30th and be put into operation in 2030.

Regarding the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway line, according to Decision 2404 dated October 29, 2025, of the Prime Minister, the line has been adjusted to become an urban railway. Currently, the People's Councils of Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai Province have agreed to assign the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City as the competent authority to implement the project. The Department of Finance of Ho Chi Minh City has also advised the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City to approve THACO to prepare the feasibility study report.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction announced that it will coordinate with relevant units to develop a comprehensive plan for the railway line connecting Tan Son Nhat Airport and Long Thanh Airport. The project aims to commence construction before June 30, 2026, and be operational by 2030.

Extend Metro Line 1 to Long Thanh Airport.

Regarding metro line 1 from Suoi Tien - Dong Nai Provincial Administrative Center - Long Thanh Airport, the two localities have agreed to assign the People's Committee of Dong Nai province as the competent authority to implement the investment and construction project under the public-private partnership (PPP) method.

Currently, the People's Committee of Dong Nai province has assigned the DonaCoop and VinaCapital consortium to prepare a proposal for extending metro line 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien) from after station S0 to the new administrative center of Dong Nai province and Long Thanh airport, with a total length of approximately 38.5 km.

The investor is currently preparing a pre-feasibility study report for the project.

Long Thanh Airport is expected to begin commercial operations in June 2026, urgently requiring the completion of transportation connections to Ho Chi Minh City.

Previously, at a meeting with voters on March 10th, Ho Chi Minh City Party Secretary Tran Luu Quang stated that the city was studying a plan to connect Tan Son Nhat Airport and Long Thanh Airport, with a travel time of approximately 30 minutes.

To achieve this goal, the Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee stated that the city is deploying a large-scale metro network, aiming to complete six metro lines within the term, including two lines passing through Tan Son Nhat Airport and Long Thanh Airport.
