Burnley manager Scott Parker celebrates with his players. |
In the early hours of April 22nd, a 2-1 victory against promotion rivals Sheffield United secured Burnley's return to the top flight. They, along with Leeds, who had previously beaten Stoke City 6-0, are guaranteed a place in the top two of the 2024/25 Championship.
Leeds' promotion marks the return to the Premier League for manager Daniel Farke, the German strategist who previously led Norwich City to promotion in the 2018/19 and 2020/21 seasons. Meanwhile, this is the third time Burnley manager Scott Parker has achieved promotion with a Championship team.
The former England international achieved something similar with Fulham in the 2019/20 season and AFC Bournemouth in the 2021/22 season. This is also a rare achievement in English football. After Leeds and Burnley secured their places in the Premier League for the 2025/26 season, another team from the Championship will gain promotion through the playoffs.
The teams ranked from 3rd to 6th after 46 rounds will compete for this remaining spot. The playoff semi-finals, played in a two-round format, will see the 3rd-placed team face the 6th-placed team, while the 4th and 5th-placed teams will also meet each other.
The two winning teams in the semi-finals will face each other in the playoff final at Wembley Stadium on May 24th to decide the final team to be promoted to the Premier League for the 2025/26 season. Currently, Sheffield United and Sunderland have secured their playoff spots, while the chances of winning the remaining two spots are evenly split among Bristol City, Coventry, Middlesbrough, Millwall, and even Blackburn Rovers.
