Lingard regrets his time playing for Manchester United. |
Speaking to Sky Sports , Lingard said he felt he had done enough to convince the Manchester United coaching staff to give him more opportunities. “After my time at West Ham, I truly believed I deserved to play more. At that time, I was one of the best players in the league and could even think about the chance to play in the EUROs,” Lingard said.
In the 2020/21 season, Lingard was loaned to West Ham. There, he exploded with 9 goals and 5 assists in just 16 appearances, becoming one of the London team's most outstanding players in the second half of the Premier League season. That brilliant form led Lingard to believe he deserved a second chance at Manchester United.
However, upon returning to Old Trafford in the 2021/22 season, the English midfielder only made 16 appearances in all competitions, mostly from the bench. Having lost patience, Lingard decided to leave when his contract expired and joined Nottingham Forest, before moving on to South Korea.
Although acknowledging that not playing regularly is unavoidable in football, Lingard still feels regret over the unfinished ending at the club where he spent almost his entire career.
"As a player, everyone wants to play every week. At some point, you'll know when your time is up and when it's time to leave," Lingard shared.
The midfielder, born in 1992, is currently a free agent after parting ways with FC Seoul, concluding two seasons playing in Asia. At 33 years old, Lingard still harbors ambitions to return to Europe to play football.
