Giovanni Leoni suffered a cruciate ligament injury and will be out for an extended period. |
The 18-year-old, who joined from Parma this summer for £26 million, played confidently before collapsing in the 81st minute and being stretchered off the pitch. Manager Arne Slot couldn't hide his disappointment: “He felt something was wrong immediately. Usually we have to wait until the next day and do an MRI to know exactly, but a player's emotions often say a lot. Hopefully the result isn't as bad as we feared.”
According to internal sources, Leoni has torn his anterior cruciate ligament and will be out for several months. Liverpool are currently waiting for the swelling to subside before making an official diagnosis.
Leoni's injury could pave the way for Federico Chiesa's return to the Champions League squad. The Italian forward, who had been left out of the squad, just had a standout performance with two assists against Southampton.
Coach Arne Slot commented: “It’s no coincidence that Chiesa was involved in both goals. He was the one who tried the hardest, worked the hardest, and proved his worth.”
Losing Leoni is a major blow for Liverpool given their packed schedule. This weekend, they will travel to Crystal Palace without both Hugo Ekitike (suspended) and Leoni (injured).
