Nineteen people were killed after a landslide near the city of Leshan in Sichuan province, southwestern China.
The landslide "occurred on a high mountain" at 6 a.m. on June 4th at a forestry station in Kinkouhe County, near Leshan City, Sichuan Province, local authorities said.

China's CCTV channel reported that 19 people died in the landslide, and local authorities have halted rescue operations and are investigating the cause.
Earlier, local authorities dispatched more than 180 people and dozens of rescue vehicles to the landslide site, located in a mountainous area about 240 km from the capital city of Chengdu.
The landslide occurred in a remote, heavily forested area, a region prone to natural disasters such as landslides and earthquakes. Weather data shows that Leshan city had experienced heavy rainfall in the two days prior to the incident.
In 2017, a major landslide occurred in Mao County, Sichuan Province, killing more than 120 people. This was considered the largest landslide in the area since the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake that killed 87,000 people.
