According to local authorities, the bridge, part of a national highway connecting central China with Tibet, collapsed Tuesday afternoon following a series of landslides in the area. There are no reports of casualties so far.
The incident occurred near the Songjiangkou Hydroelectric Power Plant in Ma Kang City. Videos circulating on social media showed the hillside beginning to collapse, creating clouds of dust and debris that flew into the air. In just seconds, the ground beneath the bridge crumbled, causing the bridge piers to tilt and the bridge span to fall into the river.

Authorities closed the 758-meter-long bridge on Monday afternoon after discovering cracks on the slopes and nearby roads, along with signs of changing terrain signaling potential hazards.
Preliminary assessments indicate the collapse was caused by geological instability and landslides on the steep mountain slopes. Rescue teams have been dispatched to the scene to assess the damage and ensure safety.
The Hongqi Bridge, constructed by the Sichuan Road & Bridge Group, was completed earlier this year and recently opened to traffic. According to a video posted on social media by the contractor, Sichuan Road & Bridge Group, the project was only finished at the beginning of this year.
An article published in the People's Daily last month mentioned the Hongqi Bridge as one of "a series of new bridges" attracting "widespread public attention." The website stated that the bridge has eased rush-hour congestion and improved "urban mobility."
