On May 29, at least six workers were killed and three others injured after a section of a bridge under construction over the Betwa River in Hamirpur district, Uttar Pradesh, India, collapsed during a severe storm.
The incident occurred at approximately 3:00 AM on May 29th in the area between the villages of Parsani and Kandaur, within the jurisdiction of the Lalpura police station, about 25km from the center of Hamirpur district.
Some workers said they were sleeping on the concrete surface of the structure when it suddenly collapsed.
Immediately after the incident, local officials arrived at the scene to direct rescue efforts.
The Uttar Pradesh State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has been deployed to search, rescue, and clear debris.
Three workers trapped under a bridge pillar have been rescued and taken to Hamirpur district hospital for treatment.
Police said the search of the scene is continuing to ensure no one is still trapped.
According to Chief Justice Abhishek Goyal, the construction was carried out by a private company and had been underway for about two years with workplace safety measures in place at the construction site.
Earlier, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and local authorities issued warnings of strong winds, storms, and heavy rain on the evening of May 28. These warnings were also broadcast to villages to alert residents and workers about the bad weather.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep sorrow over the incident and instructed local authorities to urgently deploy rescue and relief efforts and ensure adequate treatment for the injured.
The state government announced support of 500,000 rupees (over $5,200 USD) for each family with a deceased member and 50,000 rupees for each injured person.
