Just a month ago, a huge production and trading line of fake milk powder was also destroyed. Nearly 600 types of fake milk powder were released into the market without a single abnormality being detected. Immediately, the Food Safety Department was called out by public opinion.

The April 15 document of this department stated that the Ministry of Health is responsible for directing, while post-inspection and licensing are the responsibility of the local authorities. At the local level, the Food Safety and Hygiene Department of Hoa Binh and Vinh Phuc provinces have never conducted post-inspection of enterprises, or post-inspection also did not have samples for testing. This strange thing has been going on smoothly for 4 years!

Just like that, somehow, the products of the fake milk and fake dietary supplements chain openly entered hospitals and reputable drugstore systems, and then had to be recalled in panic. The investigation agency has been gradually peeling away every hidden corner in the production - business, licensing and management of this type of product that brings huge profits.

The Vietnamese market has thousands of types of health protection foods. Every year, the number of people using health protection foods increases, accounting for 1/5 of the population, with a growth rate of about 15% per year. This fertile land is thoroughly exploited by "dirty" businesses, regardless of the fact that poor quality health protection foods are harmful to health and threaten human life. At that time, if the management work is effective and substantial, hundreds of tons of fake health protection foods and hundreds of types of fake milk will not be able to blatantly infiltrate into every home of the people.

As the agency advising the Minister of Health on state management and enforcement of food safety laws nationwide, the Food Safety Department should be the “gatekeeper” responsible for ensuring food safety for the people. More deeply, it is to protect the health of future generations and the quality of the race of more than 100 million people. In reality, what have these “gatekeepers” done?

According to regulations, health food products must register their product declaration with the Food Safety Department, while the factory producing health food products must be assessed by the Food Safety Department and granted a GMP certificate (good manufacturing practice). Products in the declared or self-declared group must also be post-inspected. This is the key to ensuring that businesses comply with the law.

According to the investigation, 5 officials of the Food Safety Department received bribes, issued 4 GMP certificates, 20 product registration certificates in the fake dietary supplement chain. The secret handshake between officials of the Food Safety Department and "dirty" businesses has clarified the question of why the dietary supplement market is so chaotic in recent times.

The door to food safety for 100 million people was completely collapsed when the “gatekeeper” was manipulated by envelopes. People’s trust was eroded, society was unstable when fake food legally surrounded!

This is the time to take a bitter pill to completely reform food safety management nationwide, from the ministerial, sectoral to local levels. We must have radical solutions, strictly handle violations, deliberately circumventing legal loopholes, and bribing officials for personal gain.

It is necessary to detect and eliminate corrupt officials who assist in the production of fake food and violate the interests of the people. This is also something that cannot be delayed in order to restore people's trust, contribute to reducing the burden of disease, and establish a healthy business environment. Above all, it is a responsibility to future generations.
