In an era where busyness is celebrated, Nguyen Thanh Long's book , "Be Lazy, " offers a counter-argument that hard work doesn't necessarily guarantee results, busyness doesn't necessarily create value, and rest shouldn't be a last resort for those who have worn themselves out.
Beginning with a call to action like "Be lazy," the book doesn't condone laziness. The "laziness" that author Nguyen Thanh Long refers to is laziness in doing meaningless work, laziness in wasting energy, laziness in throwing oneself into everything just to be praised for being diligent. According to the author, this is a kind of conscious, disciplined laziness.
In the book, the author repeatedly emphasizes that hard work is not the ultimate goal. The goals in work should be to create value, work efficiently, develop oneself, earn a living, and still have enough energy to enjoy life after work.
The author of the book also emphasizes that self-care, exercise , jogging, meditation, or any healthy habit helps maintain mental and physical health, contributing effectively to work performance.
The book also addresses how humans should confront AI. According to the author, the faster AI becomes, the more humans need to learn to slow down. When machines can handle repetitive tasks, when digital tools can automate many operations, humans should not compete with machines in terms of speed. What humans need to retain is the ability to think deeply, the ability to critically analyze, and the ability to foresee consequences before acting. In the final section, the author also suggests automating what can be automated, using AI as a feedback tool to measure and adjust oneself.
