| Free English classes are held at Bac Ha Eco Homestay. |
The class started on July 1st, and regularly from Monday to Friday each week, the homestay welcomes young children who are eager to learn English. The project offers two classes for students in grades 2 to 5, divided into two sessions per day. Currently, the class has over 30 students, mostly from Bac Ha town and surrounding communes. As soon as she heard about the class, Pham Minh Khue, from Na Co village, Bac Ha town, registered to participate. Minh Khue said: "I'm joining because I hope to improve my English and make new friends."
To organize the project, the participating units recruited volunteers on social media and received enthusiastic support from students at many universities in Hanoi . Pham Tran Phuong Thao, the project leader of the charity class, is a final-year student at Hanoi Law University and is currently a teacher directly instructing the children. Each week, in addition to Phuong Thao, there are additional volunteers from Hanoi who help supplement the children's knowledge. There are five classes a week, including four English classes and one life skills class. For English, the volunteers prepare lesson plans and teach the children based on chosen topics, providing new vocabulary and basic sentence patterns. Pham Tran Phuong Thao said: "We organize the English class in Bac Ha with the hope of inspiring the children to love learning English."
During the life skills class, the children were taught by volunteers how to behave to avoid being exploited or harmed by bad people, and learned how to make useful items and toys from discarded materials. In the English lesson, they also had the opportunity to directly chat with foreign tourists staying at the homestay. Most tourists were enthusiastic and fond of the children in the class; they always listened, answered questions, and communicated with the children. Mr. Florian Schaffer, a tourist from Germany, said: "This is a wonderful class. The children study diligently, they are very cheerful and innocent. This class is also very meaningful, helping me understand more about the lives of children living in the highlands."
The first phase of the free English conversation class project for children in mountainous areas concluded on August 15th, and the second phase opened shortly thereafter. The project continues to recruit more volunteers to teach, and the target audience and class schedule will be adjusted to suit the children as they begin the new school year. This is truly a meaningful and humane class that needs to be expanded to many localities. As those involved in the project shared, a free English conversation class for children in mountainous areas is not only a dream for the children in Bac Ha, but also for many children in other disadvantaged areas.
