With nimble hands, she fed each dried water hyacinth fiber into the mold, and happily recounted how she came to this craft. Previously, an acquaintance offered her a cashew nut business, but the location was far away, she didn't know how to ride a motorbike, and the delivery company didn't provide transportation, so she had to look for other work. Just as she was struggling to find work, the water hyacinth weaving model appeared in the area, providing her with employment and a stable income. Ms. Ngoc said: “The company provides me with frames to weave, and they collect the finished products about every 5 days. Depending on each person's weaving ability, the company provides between 100 and 300 frames for weaving water hyacinth. Being able to work from home, I earn about 3 million dong per month.”
According to Ms. Ngoc, this is a job that provides a stable income. Hiring people to plant and harvest crops for hire pays more but is seasonal, while weaving water hyacinth, although less expensive, provides year-round work. The joy of having jobs and a stable life for the people is also the goal that the locality aims for. Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Vinh - Chairman of the Thoai Son Commune Farmers' Association said: “The biggest goal when implementing the model is to create jobs for people, helping them earn more income to develop their family economy and support their children's education. The Commune Farmers' Association has established branches and groups to gather members, create legal status to sign long-term contracts with companies and businesses, helping local products reach further and attracting more members to participate.”
According to Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Vinh, since the administrative boundary merger, Thoai Son commune has developed many effective economic models. Besides the water hyacinth weaving model, the locality also has models such as sorting dried squid for export, peeling jackfruit for export, etc., solving the problem of local employment for idle laborers. What is valuable about these models is not only their economic value but also their contribution to fostering a spirit of solidarity and mutual support among members and farmers.
Speaking about supporting people's economic development in the coming time, Mr. Nguyen Minh Thien - Secretary of the Party Branch and Head of Tay Hue Hamlet - expressed his concern about helping the Tay Hue Hamlet Water Hyacinth Weaving Farmers' Association access preferential loan sources to expand production. After reviewing the situation, the provincial farmers' support fund was deemed the most suitable source of funding due to its short repayment cycle of 12 months and quick disbursement procedures.
Besides the issue of capital, Mr. Thien also suggested that relevant departments support the association in promoting its products, especially by acting as a bridge to introduce and connect with companies and businesses in the province that need to purchase water hyacinth products. Strong linkages and commitments to stable output are prerequisites for attracting new members, thus expanding the association's scale and improving people's income.
To ensure the model operates effectively, the Thoai Son Commune Farmers' Association surveys needs, mobilizes the establishment of professional farmers' branches, supports technical training in weaving, connects members, and guides product output. The Association also coordinates propaganda and encourages people to utilize natural resources while protecting the rural environment. “Besides providing technical support, the Commune Farmers' Association regularly encourages members to boldly innovate designs and improve product quality to meet market demands. From simple initial products, many members can now create beautiful, highly functional products, gradually increasing the value of handicrafts made from water hyacinth,” said Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Vinh.
