Standing on the bridge over the canal in front of Soc Xoai Pagoda in My Thuan commune, it's easy to see many patches of water hyacinth drifting slowly with the current, densely concentrated in certain sections. According to local residents, water hyacinth appears year-round on this canal, especially thriving during periods of stagnant water or after heavy rains. Despite being removed by the local authorities many times, the water hyacinth continues to grow and spread after only a short time.
Having been involved in selling noodles and vegetables from a boat for many years, Ms. TC, a resident of My Thuan commune, said that the dense growth of water hyacinths on the canal in front of Soc Xoai pagoda affects people's travel. According to Ms. T, the most inconvenient thing is that the water hyacinths often get tangled in the propeller whenever the boat passes through this area. "Many days, I'm running normally, but the engine gradually weakens and then stops completely because the propeller is tightly wrapped in water hyacinths. To continue, I have to stop the boat to untangle them, and sometimes I can't get them out. That's why now I'm very reluctant to go through this canal; if possible, I'll choose another route," Ms. TC said.
Observations on the Minh Luong River, specifically the section bordering Minh Phu and Minh Lac neighborhoods in Chau Thanh commune, show a dense growth of water hyacinths on the water's surface. Large patches of water hyacinths stretch for tens of meters, in some places covering most of the river's surface, leaving only narrow spaces for waterway traffic.
Mr. NMH, residing in Minh Lac neighborhood, Chau Thanh commune, believes that the worrying issue is not only the obstruction of waterway traffic by water hyacinths but also the numerous negative consequences for the environment. “There are too many water hyacinths, and more garbage is trapped, accumulating in large clumps in some places. If not dealt with promptly, it will cause environmental pollution and affect the lives of people living along the river. The people hope for an effective solution to keep the river clean and unobstructed,” Mr. H said.
Currently, water hyacinth control mainly involves collecting and removing it when it appears. However, given its rapid growth and continuous reappearance, these immediate measures seem insufficient to completely solve the problem. This highlights the need for a more comprehensive, long-term, and effective solution to control water hyacinth growth, ensure unobstructed water flow, and minimize its impact on people's lives.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, to control the growth of water hyacinth on rivers and canals, the Department will coordinate with localities to review and address areas with dense water hyacinth growth that affect waterway traffic and water flow. Besides maintaining regular collection and removal efforts, localities are encouraged to proactively monitor and address the problem early to limit the growth of large patches of water hyacinth; and to research solutions for utilizing the collected water hyacinth.
The Department of Agriculture and Environment advises people not to use pesticides or chemicals to treat water hyacinth in rivers and canals without authorization. Improper treatment can affect the water environment and aquatic ecosystem. When dense water hyacinth growth is detected, people should inform the local authorities or relevant agencies so that appropriate measures can be taken.
